Last Player Standing is a betting competition where a group of people each put in a stake and predict one team to win in a competition each week.
If that team wins, they progress into the next round. If they draw or lose, they are eliminated.
Each team can only be picked once throughout the game. For example, if you pick Liverpool to win in week one, you cannot pick them again during that edition of Last Player Standing.
The goal is to be the final player left at the end of it all. The winner takes the full pot.
This weekend, Manchester United look to respond to their opening defeat when newly-promoted Ipswich Town visit Old Trafford. Manchester City travel to Crystal Palace, Liverpool welcome Nottingham Forest to Anfield and last season’s champions Arsenal face a difficult trip to Aston Villa.
This week’s best Last Player Standing tip: Manchester United
Manchester United will look to recover from a frustrating opening defeat when they host Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
United lost 2-0 at Hull City despite controlling the match and producing the stronger underlying numbers. They recorded 2.19 xG from 21 shots, with five efforts on target and 15 coming from inside the penalty area.
Hull scored twice from 0.99 xG and eight attempts. United also had 72% possession, won the corner count 6-1 and finished with 2.14 xPTS, showing how little the final score reflected the balance of play.
Their home record last season adds further support. United won 13 of their 19 league matches at Old Trafford, drawing three and losing three. They scored 39 goals and collected 42 points, with only Arsenal and Manchester City earning more at home.
Ipswich started with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland, but their performance was less convincing than the result. They produced 1.43 xG from 10 shots and allowed 0.91 xGA, 11 attempts and four shots on target.
United’s home record and strong opening performance make them the best Last Player Standing selection despite last weekend’s defeat.
MFT’s top Last Player Standing pick: Manchester City
Manchester City will aim to make it two wins from two when they visit Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday night.
City came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 in their opening match. They generated 2.13 xG from 13 shots, including six on target and 11 from inside the penalty area, while allowing only five attempts and 0.57 xGA.
Their away record was the second-best in the Premier League last season. City won nine of their 19 matches on the road, drawing six and losing four. They scored 32 goals and conceded 21 while collecting 33 points.
Palace won only four of 19 home league matches last season, with nine draws and six defeats. Their 21 home points ranked 16th in the division.
The Eagles were unfortunate to lose 2-0 at Everton last weekend after producing 1.71 xG and four big chances. That attacking threat creates some risk, but Palace allowed 16 shots and 1.48 xGA at the other end.
City won 3-0 on their previous visit to Selhurst Park and their opening data suggests they remain difficult to oppose in this fixture.
