Premier League - What does the data tell us

Five Premier League matches provide a limited sample, but several league positions already conflict with the quality of performances.

Manchester City have taken all 15 points from an expected total of 9.67. Their underlying numbers remain strong, with 10.02 xG and 5.53 xGA, but five straight wins overstate their level of control. City have scored 13 goals from 10.02 xG and conceded five despite allowing 3.2 big chances per game. Their results are stronger than their chance numbers.

Brighton also sit above expectation. They have scored 16 goals from 10.97 xG and conceded five from 8.72 xGA. That represents overperformance at both ends. Their attacking process still leads the division in several areas, including 19 shots, 12.6 shots inside the box and 4.4 big chances per game. Their finishing rate is unlikely to remain this high.

Manchester United are the clearest underachievers. They have five points compared with 9.22 xPTS. United rank first for open-play xG at 1.65 per game and average 22.6 shots, 12.6 shots inside the box and 5.6 on target. They have conceded eight goals from only 5.20 xGA. The performances point towards improvement.

Bournemouth have three points from 7.87 xPTS, while Nottingham Forest have five from 8.14. Forest have scored only four goals from 7.55 xG and have allowed the fewest big chances in the division at 1.2 per game. Their results undersell their performances.

Everton and Leeds United require caution. Everton have conceded three times from 7.23 xGA, while Leeds have conceded three from 6.96 xGA. Both defensive records rely on opponents failing to convert chances.

The shot data exposes Crystal Palace. They allow 16.8 shots, 12.6 shots inside the box and 5.6 shots on target per game. Their 1.75 open-play xGA is the division’s worst. Fulham also face problems, allowing four big chances and 11 shots inside the box per match.

Set pieces are driving Sunderland’s attack. They lead the league with 0.93 set-piece xG per game, but have scored six goals from 9.31 overall xG. Brighton have generated plenty from dead balls but also possess the league’s worst set-piece defence at 0.78 xGA per game.

Arsenal’s defensive record looks sustainable. They allow only 0.45 open-play xG, 5.2 shots inside the box and 2.8 shots on target per game. Unlike several teams near the top, their results rest on strong chance prevention rather than finishing or goalkeeping overperformance.
