Even at this early stage of the season, both of these heavyweights will feel that they cannot afford to come away empty-handed from this clash as they look to stay on the coattails of Arsenal.
Pep Guardiola's hosts have been ticking along nicely of late, with Wednesday night’s 4-1 demolition of Borussia Dortmund making it six wins from seven across all competitions.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have steadied the ship after claiming a couple of impressive home wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid across the last seven days.
A case could be made for either outcome on Sunday, however I’m going to bypass the 1×2 market and instead side with a player-based selection.
Jeremy Doku has been priced at 4/5 on Bet365 to be fouled twice or more during this showdown and that looks terrific value.
The Belgian speedster is enjoying his best season since joining the Citizens, something that has seen him frequently get singled out for some rough treatment from opposition defences.
In fact, Doku has drawn a team-high average of 2.30 fouls per game for Man City in this season’s Premier League.
However, a deeper dig shows that the City forward has been brought down twice or more in five of his last seven top-flight appearances, including three of his last four at the Etihad.
On top of that, Doku has earned his side multiple free-kicks in three of his four outings in the Champions League this term.
The likelihood of the Belgian international being in a direct battle with Conor Bradley only adds to the appeal of siding with this selection.
The tough-tackling Liverpool right-back has committed an average of 2.21 fouls per game across his eight Premier League appearances for the Reds this season, and there is plenty of scope for that trend to continue when he comes up against Doku on Sunday.
