Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Brighton & Hove Albion
English Premier League, KO: 15:00 Aug 19, 2023, MolineuxBrighton & Hove Albion will look to continue their superb start to the new Premier League season as they travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. Wolves can certainly make things difficult, but the Seagulls are looking confident at the moment and should have the upper hand.
Wolverhampton Wanderers began their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United last Monday. They troubled the hosts for much of the encounter but could not find the cutting edge in attack.
Gary O’Neil’s men had as many as 23 shots last time out – the second-highest figure recorded in a Premier League game at Old Trafford since 2004. While that stat is a testament to their display on the opening weekend, it suggests that Wolves may struggle to be clinical in front of goal this season.
The result at Old Trafford is an extension of their poor showing at the end of last season when they lost two of their final three matches. However, they did go unbeaten in their final five fixtures at Molineux, claiming four wins in that run.
Brighton made a flying start to the season as they picked up a 4-1 victory over newly promoted Luton Town. New boys Joao Pedro and Simon Adingra both got on the score sheet while Solly March and Evan Ferguson were also on target.
After taking the Premier League by surprise last season, much will be expected from manager Roberto De Zerbi this term. Judging by their showings on the opening weekend, Brighton appear ready to improve on last season’s performances.
With European distractions soon to be on the menu at the Amex Stadium, Brighton will be keen to amass as many points as possible at this stage. They claimed wins at Chelsea and Arsenal in the final weeks of last season but lost their last two away matches.
How the bookies view it
Brighton have been installed as overwhelming favourites among the bookies and are priced at 10/11 by William Hill to claim the win. Wolves are considered outsiders at home at 3/1 with BetVictor while Paddy Power is offering odds of 13/5 for a draw.
Recent Head to Head
Brighton have won the last three matches against Wolves and did the double over their rivals last season. The Seagulls triumphed 3-2 at Molineux before running out 6-0 winners in the reverse fixture at the Amex Stadium.
Players to watch
Evan Ferguson picked up where he left off last season by coming off the bench to grab a goal against Luton Town. The young striker could be backed to get on the score sheet once again at 7/4 with William Hill.
It is hard to predict where the goals would come from for wolves, although Matheus Cunha looked sharp at Old Trafford. Buoyed by the Molineux crowd, the forward could be backed to get on the score sheet at 13/4 with Unibet.
Anything else catch the eye?
The last meeting between Wolves and Brighton at Molineux produced over 3.5 goals, which is priced at 15/8 by Paddy Power. Over 2.5 goals is valued at 8/11 with Betfred while Unibet is offering odds 4/6 for a draw.
Brighton scored in both halves in the two meetings with Wolves last season, and Saturday’s clash can be set for a similar pattern at 17/10 with BoyleSports.
