Fulham welcome Manchester United to Craven Cottage on Sunday with kick-off at 16:30. Both sides enter the fixture under pressure following difficult starts.
Fulham remain without a league victory after taking one point from four matches. Home defeats against Chelsea and Crystal Palace came either side of a 1-0 loss at Sunderland, where Alvaro Arbeloa’s side failed to register a shot on target.
The Palace performance summed up Fulham’s season. They led twice through Joshua King and Carlos Palacios, generated 3.88 xG and attempted 25 shots, yet defensive errors resulted in a 3-2 defeat.
Arbeloa praised the commitment shown but accepted his team were conceding too easily. His response was more positive than after the Sunderland loss, when he questioned Fulham’s attitude and work in second-ball situations.
A goalless draw at Liverpool brought improvement. Bernd Leno made several saves during a disciplined defensive display, while Jeremy Jacquet cleared Gonzalo Garcia’s effort off the line.
Fulham have generated 6.81 xG across their opening fixtures. Their four goals show some attacking threat, but 18 big chances conceded remains a major concern.
Manchester United have collected four points from one win, one draw and two defeats. A 2-0 loss at Hull was followed by a 5-2 victory over Ipswich and a 2-2 draw at Everton.
Their league form then suffered another setback against Manchester City. Phil Foden was dismissed after 23 minutes, but Erling Haaland scored the only goal as the ten-man visitors won 1-0 at Old Trafford.
United struck the woodwork twice and forced a late save from Gianluigi Donnarumma. Their failure to make the numerical advantage count increased the pressure on Michael Carrick.
A 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat against Brighton followed in midweek. Shea Lacey and Mason Mount placed United two goals ahead inside ten minutes before Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit.
Pascal Gross equalised after receiving space on the edge of the area. Maxim de Cuyper completed the comeback four minutes later, leaving United with their first home defeat from a two-goal lead since 1976.
Carrick rotated his team for the cup tie. Karl Darlow made his debut, Lacey received his first senior start and Bruno Fernandes entered with 18 minutes remaining. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha are among the senior players expected to return.
United’s league data remains stronger than their results. They rank third for xPTS with 7.47 and hold a 69% expected-goal ratio. Their 46 shots from inside the penalty area are the second-highest total in the division.
Fulham have doubts over Kenny Tete and Ryan Sessegnon. Tom Cairney remains sidelined with a knee injury.
Luke Shaw is doubtful for the visitors. Amad Diallo, Tom Heaton, Carlos Baleba and Matthijs de Ligt are out, while Manuel Ugarte faces a longer absence with a cruciate ligament injury.
How the bookies view it
Fulham are 13/5, giving them an implied winning probability of 27.8%. The draw is 14/5, representing 26.3%, while Manchester United are 21/20, carrying an implied probability of 48.8%.
Over 2.5 goals is priced at 4/7, implying 63.6%. Under 2.5 goals is 7/5, representing 41.7%.
Both teams to score is 11/20 for yes and 6/4 for no. Those prices equate to respective probabilities of 64.5% and 40%.
Manchester United are 8/15 in the draw-no-bet market. Fulham are 13/8.
Head to head: Utd hold strong record with plenty of goals
Manchester United have won eight of the last 12 meetings. Three ended level, while Fulham recorded one victory.
United have also won four of their last five league visits to Craven Cottage. The other finished 1-1 in August 2025.
The latest meeting produced a 3-2 Manchester United victory at Old Trafford in February. Both teams have scored in the past three encounters.
Player to watch: Bruno Fernandes to pull the strings for Utd
Bruno Fernandes should return to the starting lineup after beginning the Carabao Cup defeat against Brighton on the bench.
The Manchester United captain has played every minute of the opening four league matches. He has scored three goals from 16 attempts, with five shots hitting the target, while generating 2.28 xG.
Fernandes has also created nine chances and recorded 1.13 xA, underlining his role as United’s main creative player.
His strongest performance came against Ipswich. Fernandes scored a hat-trick from eight shots, hit the target three times and created three opportunities for teammates.
He remained involved against Manchester City despite the 1-0 defeat, registering a shot on target and producing 0.33 xA.
Fernandes should operate behind Matheus Cunha at Craven Cottage. Fulham have struggled to protect the space in front of their central defenders, placing the United captain in a strong position to shoot from central areas and supply the attacking runners around him.
Predicted lineups
Fulham (4-2-3-1): Leno, Castagne, Affengruber, Bassey, Robinson, Berge, Charles, Bobb, King, Iwobi, Garcia.
Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Lammens, Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Dorgu, Tielemans, Mainoo, Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford, Cunha.
Anything else catch the eye
Fulham have conceded six goals across two home matches while allowing five big chances per game. Their attacking performances have contained positive periods, but defensive mistakes have repeatedly removed the value of those spells.
United have generated 3.04 xG across two away fixtures while allowing 2.05. One point from those matches understates their performance level, particularly after creating enough opportunities to win at Hull.
The Brighton collapse raises concerns over confidence and game management. The expected return of several first-choice players should still produce a stronger side than the one used in midweek.
Manchester United’s shooting volume and central attacking quality provide the clearest advantage. Fulham remain competitive, but their defensive record makes another setback more likely.
