Motherwell vs Celtic

, KO: 20:00 , Fir Park
Celtic

Wilfried Nancy has eased some of the pressure by leading Celtic to back-to-back wins but now faces a defining week in his reign, with this tricky road to trip to Motherwell followed by an Old Firm derby at Parkhead.

Some fans wanted the Frenchman binned after he lost his first four games in charge but Nancy has since savoured wins over Aberdeen and Livingston.

Saturday's 4-2 victory in West Lothian, which brought up two bets for me, was far from convincing though and Celtic looked wide open in defence again.

Rock-bottom Livingston could have scored more than twice so a Motherwell side sitting fourth in the table will fancy their chances with home advantage.

The Steelmen drew 1-1 at Fir Park against Rangers on day one and would have also banked a point at Celtic Park had Daizen Maeda not netted a late winner in a 3-2 win for the Hoops.

Jens Berthel Askou has Motherwell playing some nice football and they were unfortunate not to get something at Ibrox on Saturday, with a strong penalty appeal denied in stoppage-time of their 1-0 loss to Rangers.

The Dane will tell his team to have a go at Nancy's flimsy three-man defence so the stage is set for what should be a cracking game in South Lanarkshire.

How the bookies view it: Motherwell tempting at 3/1

Celtic are usually heavy odds-on favourites at Fir Park but it says everything about the season both teams are having that you can back them at 19/20 with 888Sport. Motherwell are 3/1 with Betfred for the win, which is pretty tempting, while a draw pays 13/5 with most firms.

Recent head to head: Steelmen seek spirit of 2013

That 3-2 triumph at Celtic Park earlier this season made it five successive wins for the Hoops in this fixture. You have to go back to 2013 for Motherwell's last win over the Glasgow giants.

Players to watch: Nygren in the mood

I flagged up Benjamin Nygren as Celtic's biggest threat against Livingston and the Swedish midfielder scored twice to take his tally for the season to 11 for club and country. One of those goals came against Motherwell and he's 9/5 at Coral to repeat the feat.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos started on the bench for Motherwell at Ibrox but could be unleashed from the off here as he has the physical attributes to unsettle Celtic. The Aussie striker is 23/10 at BetVictor to get on the scoresheet.

Probable line-ups

Keeper Kasper Schmeichel sat out Celtic's win at Livingston but Nancy revealed the Dane should return for this game. Regulars Alistair Johnston, Cameron-Carter Vickers, Kelechi Iheanacho, Jota and Marcello Saracchi remain out. With a big derby looming, Nancy may decide to freshen things up a bit.

Tawanda Maswanhise is on Africa Cup of Nations duty and misses out for Motherwell along with Filip Stuparevic, Sam Nicholson, Zach Robinson and Eseosa Sule. Askou also has doubts over Andy Halliday, Aston Oxborough and Jordan McGhee while on-loan Stephen Welsh can't face his parent club,

Motherwell: Ward, McGinn, O'Donnell, Gordon, Longelo, Slattery, Fadinger, Watt, Just, Said, Stamatelopoulos.

Celtic: Schmeichel, Ralston, Trusty, Scales, McGregor, Engels, Nygren, Hatate, Yang, Maeda, Kenny.

Anything else catch the eye?

Celtic haven't kept a clean sheet since Nancy took over and his high-risk brand of football is producing plenty of thrillers.

Motherwell have lacked penetration up front in recent weeks but should get some joy and combining BTTS and over 2.5 goals continues to offer good value at evens.

Celtic looked particularly vulnerable down their right flank in Livingston, with Cristian Montano scoring twice. Motherwell's Emmanuel Longelo is a similar kind of player to Montano and the marauding left-back is a decent 2/1 at Bet365 for a shot on target.

Going for corners has paid off for me in Celtic's last two matches and I see no reason to change tack for what should be another open game. Over 11.5 corners pays 5/4 at BetVictor.
