It is a top of the table clash in Group G of the European Championship qualifiers as Hungary host Serbia on Saturday. A closely fought encounter could be on the cards here but having already beaten the Serbians in the reverse fixture, Hungary will be confident of coming out on top.
It has been an impressive qualifying campaign for Hungary so far as they are setting the pace in Group G despite playing one game less than the rest of the teams. They are yet to taste defeat having picked up three wins and a draw from four matches.
Hungary claimed a 2-1 victory over Serbia in their previous qualifying fixture. They fell behind early in the encounter after Adam Szalai put through his own net but fought back to lead before the break through Barnabas Vargas and Willi Orban.
Home form is often pivotal for Hungary, who are unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions at Puskas Arena. Marco Rossi’s men have claimed four wins in that run but were held to a 1-1 draw by Czech Republic in a friendly back in September.
Serbia have reasons to be pleased with their qualifying campaign so far as they remain well on course to reach next year’s competition in Germany. They have claimed three wins and a draw from five matches and are level on 10 points with Hungary.
The one blemish in an otherwise solid campaign for Serbia is the defeat to Hungary in the reverse fixture. Dragan Stojkovic’s men were made to pay for failing to press their advantage after taking an early lead.
Serbia will be out for revenge on Saturday and travel to the Puskas Arena unbeaten away from home in the qualifiers. They have picked up two wins and a draw from three away matches and earned a 3-1 victory in Lithuania last time out in the qualifiers.
