Club Brugge and Aston Villa begin their Champions League campaigns at Jan Breydelstadion on Tuesday evening, kick-off 17:45, with the league-phase fixture shown live on TNT Sports.
The clubs meet for the fourth time in two years after facing each other three times during the 2024/25 competition. Brugge won the first meeting in Belgium, but Villa responded with two convincing victories in the round of 16.
Club Brugge enter the game in better domestic form. Ivan Leko's side have won four of their opening five league matches, scoring nine goals and conceding two. Their run includes 3-0 victories over Kortrijk and OH Leuven, while four of their five opponents have failed to score.
Villa arrive in Belgium without a Premier League goal this season. They lost 4-0 at Brighton and 1-0 at home to Arsenal before drawing 0-0 with Hull City, extending their scoring drought to 315 minutes.
The contrast between current form and recent European performance makes the result market difficult to assess.
How the bookies view it
Club Brugge are 17/10, carrying an implied probability of 37.0%. The draw is available at 14/5, representing 26.3%, while Aston Villa are 6/4, which equates to 40.0%.
Over 2.5 goals is priced at 7/10, giving it an implied probability of 58.8%. Both teams to score is 6/10, requiring a 62.5% strike rate.
My model makes Aston Villa narrow favourites at 41.0%, with Club Brugge rated at 35.0% and the draw at 24.0%.
Head to head: Villa hold the edge
All three previous meetings came during the 2024/25 Champions League.
Club Brugge won the league-phase fixture 1-0 in Belgium through a Hans Vanaken penalty. Villa then returned to Jan Breydelstadion in the round of 16 and won 3-1 before completing a 6-1 aggregate victory with a 3-0 success at Villa Park.
Brugge's league-phase victory remains their only win in their last 19 matches against English opposition. They have drawn three and lost 15 during that sequence.
Villa have won three of their last five meetings with Belgian clubs, drawing one and losing one.
Player to watch: Hans Vanaken now the main man after Tzolis' exit
Hans Vanaken scored the winner when Club Brugge beat Aston Villa in November 2024 and remains central to the hosts' attacking structure.
The Brugge captain is expected to operate alongside Freddie Potts at the base of midfield, with Hugo Vetlesen, Romeo Vermant and Mamadou Diakhon supporting Nicolo Tresoldi.
Christos Tzolis's move to Arsenal has increased the creative responsibility placed on Vanaken. Brugge have still produced 10.6 xG across their opening five league matches, ranking fourth in Belgium, while registering 205 touches in the opposition box, the second-highest total.
Vanaken's influence on possession and chance creation should make him central to Brugge's attempts to control the game and test Villa's rebuilt defence.
Predicted lineups
Club Brugge (4-2-3-1): Sommer, Sabbe, Lee, Mechele, Seys, Potts, Vanaken, Vetlesen, Vermant, Diakhon, Tresoldi.
Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Suzuki, Cash, Lindelof, Mings, Maatsen, Kamara, Barkley, McGinn, Buendia, Hemmings, Jackson.
Anything else catch the eye
Club Brugge's domestic numbers show a side controlling territory and producing consistent attacking pressure. They average 2.12 xG, approximately 16.8 shots and 5.4 efforts on target per game.
Their finishing has fallen slightly below expectation. Brugge have scored nine times from 10.6 xG, with one of those goals recorded as an own goal. Their 10.7% shot conversion rate is solid without being exceptional.
The defensive record looks stronger than the underlying process. Brugge have kept four clean sheets but allowed 4.7 xGA and 3.6 shots on target per match. Their opponents have converted only 11% of shots on target, scoring twice from chances worth close to five goals.
Yann Sommer has contributed to that record. Across the last three Champions League seasons, he has prevented 9.5 goals compared with the xG value of shots on target faced, the second-best return in the competition.
Villa's attacking figures are the main concern with a visitors' win. Emery's side average only 0.70 xG after three Premier League matches and have produced one shot on target. They generated 0.33 xG at Brighton, 0.43 against Arsenal and 1.34 at Hull without scoring.
Their squad has undergone extensive change following the departures of Emiliano Martinez, Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne. Only seven of the 22 goals scored by Villa players during their 2024/25 Champions League campaign came from footballers still at the club.
European form provides a stronger case for the visitors. Villa have won eight of their 12 Champions League matches under Emery and 13 of 15 in last season's Europa League. They have also lost only three of their last 21 European group-stage or league-phase fixtures.
Club Brugge have lost only three of their last 22 European home matches, but their games at this level have been open. Their 14 European fixtures last season produced 59 goals, averaging 4.2, while they have scored at least three times in six of their last seven home Champions League matches.
Those numbers create some support for over 2.5 goals, but is a little short on price. Both teams to score is even shorter at 6/10 and depends on Villa immediately ending their scoring problems.
The result market offers the better route. My model identifies only a narrow edge, and Villa's attacking form prevents this from being a high-confidence selection. Their European record under Emery, two convincing wins over Brugge in the 2024/25 knockout stage and the 5/6 price on Aston Villa DNB is the preferred bet.
