Chelsea vs Leeds Utd

, KO: 20:00 , Stamford Bridge
Leeds Utd

Chelsea and Leeds United meet at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, kick-off 20:00, with a place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup at stake. Both clubs have made unbeaten starts at home this season, although their early Premier League performances show a clear difference in attacking output.

Chelsea opened their league campaign with a 3-2 win at Fulham before beating Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge. Their winning start ended with a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, where they created only 0.47 xG and allowed 2.26 xGA.

Xabi Alonso’s side have scored eight goals across those three matches. They have generated 5.75 xG, averaging 1.92 per game, while their 48 shots include 33 attempts from inside the penalty area.

Chelsea’s defensive numbers are less convincing. They have conceded in every league match, allowing seven goals from 5.03 xGA. Opponents have recorded 21 shots on target, an average of seven per game.

Their only home league appearance developed into a 4-3 win over Brighton. Chelsea generated 3.36 xG, created six big chances and registered 15 shots inside the box, but Brighton still produced 1.26 xG and scored three times.

The Blues made more convincing progress in the EFL Cup, beating Luton Town 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Danny Welbeck opened the scoring on his debut before Hakeem Odoffin diverted Estevao’s effort into his own net.

The margin could have been wider. Chelsea produced 2.67 xG from 26 attempts, created six big chances and hit the woodwork three times. Luton goalkeeper Josh Keeley made six saves as the League One side struggled to contain sustained pressure.

Leeds arrive unbeaten after three Premier League games. They started with a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest before recording 1-1 draws against Brentford and Brighton.

Daniel Farke’s side have scored in every league match, but their attacking output has been less consistent than Chelsea’s. Leeds have generated 3.89 xG and 33 shots, averaging 1.30 xG and 11 attempts per game.

Their defensive numbers suggest opponents have found space. Leeds have faced 54 shots, including 34 from inside the penalty area, and allowed 5.00 xGA. They have conceded only twice, leaving a gap between their results and the quality of chances faced.

Leeds also beat Nottingham Forest in the previous round, returning to the City Ground four days after their league victory and winning 2-0. Daniel James opened the scoring from Sean Longstaff’s pass before James Justin converted following a goalmouth scramble.

The performance supported the result. Leeds created five big chances and generated 2.02 xG, while Forest finished with 0.83. James Trafford and Joe Rodon still made important interventions when the tie remained close.

Both teams to score is available at 7/10 for yes, representing 58.8%.

Head to head: Chelsea hold the edge

Chelsea have won six of the 10 meetings since Leeds returned to the Premier League in 2020. Leeds have recorded two victories, with the other two matches finishing level.

The Blues are unbeaten in the five meetings played at Stamford Bridge during that period, winning four and drawing one. They have scored 12 goals across those games.

Leeds earned a 3-1 home victory in December 2025 before holding Chelsea to a 2-2 draw in the return league fixture. Chelsea responded by winning 1-0 when the teams met in the FA Cup semi-final in April.

Seven of the last 10 meetings have produced at least two goals. Chelsea have won with Over 1.5 match goals in five of those fixtures.

Player to watch: Danny Welbeck to give mature performance

Danny Welbeck is expected to lead Chelsea’s attack after scoring on his debut against Luton Town in the previous round.

The 35-year-old was denied during the first half by Josh Keeley but continued to find space inside the penalty area. His breakthrough arrived early in the second half when he headed in from close range.

Welbeck will have Cole Palmer and Estevao operating behind him if Chelsea use the expected lineup. That supply line should give him opportunities against a Leeds defence allowing 11.33 shots inside the box per league game.

Predicted lineups

Chelsea (3-4-2-1): Penders; Acheampong, Lacroix, Colwill; Gusto, Lavia, Barco, Chavarria; Estevao, Palmer; Welbeck.

Leeds United (3-4-2-1): Trafford; Elvedi, Bijol, Tarik Muharemovic; Bogle, Ampadu, Longstaff, Justin; Aaronson, Wilson; Nmecha.

Anything else catch the eye

Chelsea’s attacking numbers provide the strongest case for a home victory. They average 1.92 xG and 3.67 big chances per league game, while their cup performance against Luton produced another six clear opportunities.

The concern with backing Chelsea at 4/6 is the price. It falls below my minimum oods, while their defensive record makes a win to nil difficult to support. They have allowed 1.68 xGA per league match and are yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet.

Leeds have enough attacking threat to cause problems. They have scored in every league appearance and created five big chances during their cup win at Nottingham Forest. Their three league games have still produced only five goals, with Farke’s side scoring once in each.

The larger issue for Leeds is the volume of pressure they have faced. Opponents average 18 shots per game against them, while their 5.00 xGA is considerably higher than the two goals conceded. Trafford has already been required to make important saves in both league and cup matches.

Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Luton also showed their second-choice lineup retains considerable attacking depth. Alonso’s side registered 44 touches in the opposition box and produced 2.58 xG from open play despite Keeley repeatedly denying them.

Combining Chelsea with Over 1.5 goals improves the price without requiring Leeds to score. It covers home wins such as 2-0, 2-1 or 3-0, while matching Chelsea’s early scoring numbers and Leeds’ high defensive shot volume.
