Manchester United return to the Champions League at Old Trafford on Thursday, where Azerbaijani champions Sabah provide the opposition at 8pm. United are back in the competition for the first time since 2023-24, while the visitors are preparing for their first appearance in the league phase of any UEFA tournament.
The match will be Manchester United's 300th European Cup fixture, making them the first English club to reach the milestone. This is their 26th appearance in the Champions League proper, more than any other English side.
Their recent record in the competition offers less encouragement. United have won one of their last seven group-stage or league-phase matches, drawing two and losing four. They finished bottom of their group during their previous appearance.
Michael Carrick's side have taken four points from their opening three Premier League matches. A 2-0 defeat at Hull was followed by a 5-2 home victory over Ipswich and a 2-2 draw at Everton.
The underlying numbers are stronger than those results. United have generated 7.08 xG while allowing 4.03 xGA, giving them the fourth-best xG ratio in the Premier League at 0.64. They also lead the division for shots, averaging 22.67 per game.
Sabah arrive with the stronger results record. They won the Azerbaijani Premier League last season after collecting 78 points from 33 matches, finishing nine clear of Qarabag. Their 75 goals and +50 goal difference were the best figures in the division.
They have opened the new domestic campaign with three wins, eight goals and three clean sheets. Those results extend their record across all competitions this season to nine wins and two defeats from 11 matches.
Sabah also negotiated four rounds of Champions League qualifying. They won six of eight games, scored 18 goals and found the net in every match. Their run included a 4-0 home victory over AGF and a 5-2 win against Hapoel Beer Sheva.
Michael Carrick is without Manuel Ugarte, Amad Diallo, Carlos Baleba, Tom Heaton and Matthijs de Ligt, while Marcus Rashford is doubtful. Patrick Dorgu and Benjamin Sesko are expected to join Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes in the attacking positions.
Valdas Dambrauskas has an almost fully available squad, with Khayal Aliyev the only confirmed absentee because of a tendon rupture. Veljko Simic should start behind Joy-Lance Mickels after scoring six goals during qualifying.

Player to watch: Bruno Fernandes to run the game
Bruno Fernandes has started the Premier League season with three goals from his opening two appearances. He has produced 11 shots, four efforts on target and 2.10 xG across 180 minutes.
His creative output has remained strong. Fernandes has created six chances and recorded 0.74 xA, averaging three chances created per game. All three goals came in the 5-2 victory over Ipswich, when he generated 2.02 xG from eight shots and placed three on target.
Fernandes also has six goals and nine assists across 19 Champions League appearances for Manchester United. His 15 direct goal contributions represent an average of one every 100 minutes. United's expected control of possession should give him regular opportunities to create chances and attack the penalty area.

Anything else catch the eye
Manchester United's results have not fully reflected their attacking production. They created 1.83 xG, took 21 shots and registered 15 attempts from inside the box during the defeat at Hull.
The response against Ipswich showed the strength of their attack at Old Trafford. United scored five times from 4.56 xG, producing 33 shots, 11 efforts on target and seven big chances.
Their performance dropped at Everton, where they generated 0.69 xG and allowed 18 shots. United still scored twice but extended their run without a league clean sheet to three matches.
Sabah's scoring record makes the odds-on price for both teams not to score difficult to support. They have found the net in 14 consecutive matches and scored in all eight Champions League qualifiers.
Their away results provide the strongest evidence. Sabah scored in each of their four qualifying matches on the road, with both teams to score landing against The New Saints, AGF and Hapoel Beer Sheva. The only exception was their 2-0 win at KuPS.
The difference in standard remains the main concern. United should control possession through Mainoo, Tielemans and Fernandes, forcing Sabah into a deeper defensive shape. Their average of 22.67 shots per Premier League game points towards sustained pressure.
Sabah still have a route into the match through transitions. United have allowed 4.03 xGA and 15 shots on target across three league games, while their defensive absences reduce the appeal of backing a home clean sheet.
Over 2.5 goals looks likely but offers little value at 1/4. Manchester United are also too short at 1/8. The remaining goals market backs United to score while targeting Sabah's consistent attacking record.
