Brighton and Hove Albion vs Liverpool

, KO: 14:00 Oct 8, 2023, AMEX Stadium
Liverpool

LIVERPOOL head down to the south coast with a sense of grievance after an incredible week for them.

The Reds lost their unbeaten record last week at Spurs and went down to an own goal after being reduced to nine men.

But it was the botched VAR call that wrongly disallowed a Liverpool goal that should have stood which has created World War 3 on Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp has demanded a highly unlikely replay of the game, but the question from a betting perspective is whether Liverpool will be energised by their strong sense of injustice.

They had started the season well and look like they could challenge Manchester City and Arsenal. They were in Europa League action on Thursday against Union St Gilloise and eased to a 2-0 win.

Brighton were also in Europa League action in Marseille and will surely take plenty of encouragement from battling back from being two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw in the Velodrome. But they have been a bit of a puzzle to punters this season.

They have beaten Newcastle United at home and won at Old Trafford, but they collapsed to a shocking 6-1 annihilation from Aston Villa last week and have also lost at home to West Ham.

Which Brighton will turn up?

How the bookies view it

Liverpool are hovering just over the evens mark here although you can get some 6/5 with 10Bet.

Brighton are 2/1 outsiders with bet365 and the draw is 16/5 with William Hill.

Recent head to heads

Twice Liverpool travelled to the AMEX last season in the league and in the FA Cup and twice they left with their tail between their legs with Brighton winning 3-0 and 2-1. The other game resulted in a 3-3 draw at Anfield.

Players to watch

Japanese technician Kaoru Mitoma scored a double in Brighton's last home game when they beat Bournemouth 3-1. He is 13/5 to score on Sunday with William Hill.

With Diogo Jota suspended, the onus will be on Mo Salah to do what he does best and the Egyptian magician is 8/5 to score anytime with William Hill.

Anything else catch the eye?

Liverpool really should have won last week at in-form Spurs even without the controversies and they look a very slick outfit this season. They should have too much for an inconsistent Brighton side.

Brighton at their best are a match for any team, but unlike Liverpool, they have no experience in handling played away in Europe and then bouncing back for a big match at the weekend.

And the Anfield side should be fired up for this one.

Given the controversies of last week, it wouldn't be the greatest of surprises if Liverpool were to be awarded a penalty here too. It's one of those quirks of football and it's worth chancing bet365's 10/3 on the visitors scoring one.
