History is firmly on this side. Ten of the last thirteen World Cup semi-finals, including last night's France against Spain, have finished with both teams carded, a rate of 77%.

My own tournament data backs the trend. England have had both sides carded in four of six games this summer, Argentina in three of six, and their combined discipline gap is the interesting part. England sit at 1.33 cards per game, Argentina at 1.0, among the cleanest in the competition, but that clean record has mostly come against Cape Verde, Jordan and Egypt, nobody who tested them the way Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane will.
Ismail Elfath takes charge, his fourth match of the tournament and known for letting things go rather than reaching for his pocket. Even a lenient referee has struggled to keep two full teams out of his notebook in a semi-final of this magnitude, and I don't expect Wednesday to be the exception.
