When the day started off with a winner in the shape of David's Well, I did think we were going to be onto a very good day.

It didn't quite go to plan after the opening success, and that meant we ended the day with a small loss.

David's Well is a talented chaser, and if he can come on for that run, there's no reason why he can't win again on soft ground.

Regarde didn't put in a clean jumping performance in the Berkshire National, and that saw his gas tank get empty late in the race, which is where we see him ploughing on.

Bobbi With An I also didn't jump well, and was scruffy at a few, getting in too close. Not only that, I don't think she stayed the trip, so I'd like to see her back over an intermediate trip.

Unlike many of the Sam Thomas horses, Shomen Uchi looked in need of the run. I'll be back on him next time out, as I think he is still progressive.

Intent Approach 11/2 (1pt) – Punchestown 1.52

Usually, in races like the Pertemps, qualifier contests do not interest me. In these races, you have trainers trying to get inside the places so that they are cemented for the final spot at Cheltenham in March.

However, this race is slightly different. Charles Byrnes is a stable who lands a lot of gambles, which makes it hard to predict what to get from his horses. I'm willing to give his runner, Intent Approach, a chance in this race right at the bottom of the weights.

Of the horses at the top of the weights, I can only envisage Custom Taylor wanting to win this race. That horse is on a three-race winning streak and will likely want to land this before progressing onto more Class 1 races. Which makes me think a horse at the bottom of the weights, who has the final in mind, is the correct move.

If Charles Byrnes is planning a go at Cheltenham in March for the Pertemps, then Intent Approach will have to win this. If he wins this in fantastic style, he might get a huge increase in the handicap, or he'll likely need another win. Last year, you needed to be running off a handicap mark of 128 to get into the handicap, which is 13lbs higher than Intent Approach's current rating.

Not seeing Charles' son in the saddle or Mark Walsh isn't concerning. Both of the jockeys I've just mentioned can't make this weight of 10st 1lbs, so having Aidan Kelly makes the most sense. Aidan claims 3lbs, which is a huge benefit for a race which is going to be run on soft to heavy ground, which drains the stamina very quickly.

There is some good racing in Ireland, and I was tempted by Gaelic Warrior. I think that his main aim for this part of the season is the King George, so maybe he won't be ready first time out. However, I think he's the best horse in the race, so I couldn't put people off from backing him.
