View the first of our World Cup Group Accumulators ahead of this summer’s showpiece getting underway next Thursday.
Qatar Not To Qualify
Qatar failed to emerge from the group stage when they hosted the World Cup four years ago, and they could suffer the same fate this time around. Julen Lopetegui's team could hardly have asked for a tougher opener, with Group B favourites Switzerland first up. Things are unlikely to get any easier on matchday two when they take on co-hosts Canada.
Qatar’s final game against Bosnia and Herzegovina could potentially be a straight shootout for third place. However, the Dragons demonstrated their quality by knocking Italy out in the play-off round, which could leave the Maroons facing another early exit.
Iran To Qualify
Iran could break new ground by reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in their history this summer. Team Melli have been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand. Iran will get their campaign underway against the latter of those three teams, presenting them with an ideal opportunity to hit the ground running and pick up three points.
The Iranians will be tough opponents for both Egypt and Belgium thereafter, and they are more than capable of picking up a draw from one of those two fixtures to book their place in the round of 32.
Senegal To Qualify
Senegal are many observers’ dark horses at this year’s World Cup, and with good reason. The Lions of Teranga boast a squad littered with talent and plenty of Premier League and European experience. What’s more, the African heavyweights have progressed from the group stage in two of their previous three World Cup appearances.
While they have been placed in a difficult group this time around, neither France nor Norway will relish the prospect of coming up against Senegal. A matchday three victory over Iraq should be enough to extend their stay on the global stage into the knockout round.
Ghana To Qualify
Ghana are another of the African participants who look well placed to navigate their way into the knockout round at this summer’s World Cup. The Black Stars will not be a pushover for either Croatia or England in Group L, and they are more than capable of taking a point from at least one of those fixtures, if not more. Ghana's best chance of building momentum, though, comes in their opener against Panama, a game they will be expected to win.
