Newcastle vs Manchester United, Wednesday (20:15)

Newcastle and Manchester United will square off under the lights at St James’ Park on Wednesday night, with the two sides entering this contest in starkly different shape.

Eddie Howe’s hosts will be desperately seeking to arrest their slump in form after Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Everton left them with five defeats from their last six top-flight matches.

Manchester United, on the other hand, are gathering momentum under Michael Carrick, claiming six wins from their last seven assignments in the Premier League, including a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Joelinton 1+ Foul Committed

For the first of two player-based picks, I’m happy to back Joelinton to commit at least one foul. The midfield battle between these sides is likely to be fierce, and the Brazilian should be right in the thick of it. Moreover, Joelinton has already been a regular on the referee’s radar this season, averaging 2.06 fouls per game in the Premier League.

With Manchester United packed full of technically gifted operators in midfield and attack, the Magpies warrior looks like a prime candidate to overstep the mark at least once.

Diogo Dalot to Commit 1+ Foul

I’m now turning my attention to a Manchester United player in the same market, by backing Diogo Dalot to commit at least one foul. Since Michael Carrick took over on an interim basis and switched United back to a back-four, Dalot has seen a noticeable rise in fouls conceded. The Red Devils’ right-back has been penalised seven times across his last seven Premier League appearances, giving away multiple free kicks in two of those matches.

The likelihood of Dalot coming up against Anthony Gordon only strengthens the case for this pick, with the Newcastle forward drawing an average of 1.77 fouls per 90 in the top-flight this term.

Both Teams to Receive a Card

I’ll round off the bet builder by backing both teams to receive a card in what promises to be a keenly contested clash at St James’ Park. While neither side ranks among the most ill-disciplined outfits in the Premier League this season, both are still averaging comfortably over one card per game, with each of their respective figures hovering around the 1.5 mark.

It’s also worth noting that both teams went into the book in the reverse fixture earlier this season, while six of Manchester United’s seven Premier League matches under Michael Carrick's watch have seen both sides carded.

With referee Peter Banks averaging 3.95 cards per game in the top-flight this term, the case for this selection only grows stronger.

Combined, the above-mentioned treble will bring about an even-money (1/1) shot on bet365, which looks like good value.

  • Diogo Dalot To Commit 1+ Foul
  • Both Teams to Receive a Card
