Kilmarnock vs St Mirren (Wednesday, 19:45)

Kilmarnock and St Mirren will square off in a crunch Scottish Premiership clash at Rugby Park on Wednesday night.

The 11th-placed hosts have shown some signs of improvement under new manager Neil McCann, collecting four points from a possible 12, most notably sweeping aside Aberdeen 3-0 at home last month.

As for St Mirren, they sit six points above 11th-placed Kilmarnock following a 1-0 win against Hearts last midweek.

A case could be made for either side here, but as I tend to do in this column, I’m going to switch my attention to a player-based selection that looks particularly enticing.

Alex Gogic can be backed at 21/10 on Ladbrokes to commit two or more fouls, and that looks too big to ignore.

The St Mirren stalwart is well known for being a fierce competitor, something that goes hand in hand with him committing fouls on a frequent basis.

That has certainly been the case this season, with Gogic committing an average of 1.53 fouls per game in the Scottish Premiership.

However, those statistics don’t tell the full story in terms of the logic behind this selection.

Having been deployed at centre-half for a large stretch of the opening period of the season, Gogic has moved back into midfield in recent months.

That shift has coincided with a sharp spike in the number of free-kicks that the tough-tackling Cypriot has been giving away.

In fact, across his last nine Scottish top-flight outings – all of which have been in a central midfield role – Gogic has been penalised at least twice in six of those match-ups.

Upon closer inspection, it can be seen that the 31-year-old has been guilty of three or more offences in four of those matches, giving away no fewer than five free-kicks during last week’s 1-0 win over Hearts.

Now set to come up against Kilmarnock on Wednesday night in a game that will almost certainly have huge ramifications in the fight for survival in the Scottish Premiership this term, Gogic looks terrific value to commit two or more fouls.

The case for siding with this selection becomes even more appealing when you factor in the likelihood of Gogic being in direct battle with Kilmarnock’s David Watson, who is drawing an average of 1.87 fouls per 90 in the top-flight this season.
