Wales vs Poland

, KO: 19:45 Mar 26, 2024, Cardiff City Stadium
Poland

THE Cardiff City Stadium was rocking last week as Wales brushed Finland aside and that Dragons roar will be needed again as Rob Page's side bid to dump Poland and reach the Euro 2024 finals.

Both sides head into this play-off showpiece in high spirits after the Welsh battered Finland 4-1 in their semi-final and the Poles dished out a 5-1 beating against Estonia.

I was expecting that clash with the Finns to be tight and tense but Page's side were ruthless as they found the form that had seen them shock Croatia in Cardiff during the qualifiers.

While it has been an inconsistent campaign for the Welsh, those two results show they can still be a formidable team at home with a passionate crowd behind them.

And Wales will need to hit the same heights to see off a Poland side who are desperate to reach the finals for what could be a last hurrah for skipper Robert Lewandowski at international level.

It was amazing that the Poles managed to score five against Estonia in their semi and the Barcelona star didn't get himself on the scoresheet, busting the coupon of our man Slips Tips in the process. But that semi-final showed Michał Probierz's side are far from a one-man team, with five different players chipping in with goals.

The Poles had a terrible qualifying campaign and are in the play-offs after finishing behind Albania and the Czechs in what should have been an easy group. But the spirit in the camp is better now after unpopular boss Fernando Santos was binned and replaced by Probierz, with that semi-final rout showing Poland are back in their stride.

How the bookies view it

This is a hard one to call but home advantage gives Wales the edge with the bookies. Page's side are 9/10 favourites with Unibet to qualify but the price increases to 7/5 with Bet365 for a win inside 90 minutes. Poland are a tempting 23/20 at Paddy Power to go through and Bet365 price them at 9/4 to do it without extra time or penalties. The draw at 90 minutes pays a best 21/10 at BetMGM.

Head to head

Wales will have to make history if they're to reach the finals as they have never beaten Poland before. The Poles have won six of the seven meetings, with the other match ending in a draw. They last met in the Nations League two years ago, with a 2-1 home victory in Warsaw followed by a 1-0 Poland triumph in Cardiff.

Players to watch

Brennan Johnson was one of the Welsh scorers in the semi-final and the Spurs winger has the pace to trouble Poland's defence. He's a generous 10/3 at Bet365 for anytime scorer while Paddy Power are offering 15/8 on him providing either a goal or assist.

Lewandowski is always worth backing when he's above evens for anytime scorer and Paddy Power have him at a tempting 15/8 for goal. The same firm also offer 13/8 on either a goal or assist for the Barcelona man and that looks good value.

Anything else catch the eye?

Betting on a close game backfired on me in the Welsh semi-final but everything suggests this final should be tight. The last six meetings have all ended in a one-goal winning margin and that bet pays 6/5 with McBookie here. The half-time draw also appeals at a best 28/29 with VBet.

Some stats bets also catch the eye and Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinksi, a scorer in Poland's semi, is 13/8 with Bet365 just to have a shot on target. I also like the 11/8 on offer at Paddy Power for Welsh stopper Chris Mepham to commit over 1.5 fouls.
