Sunderland vs Manchester United

, KO: 15:00 , Stadium of Light
Manchester United

It's mission accomplished for Michael Carrick this season with Champions League football secured but he will still want to finish the campaign strongly to boost his chances of holding onto the Manchester United job.

Last weekend's rousing 3-2 win at home to old rivals Liverpool guaranteed a top-five finish so the pressure is off as Carrick takes his side to Sunderland.

The former Old Trafford midfielder has done a sterling job since taking the reins from Ruben Amorim, losing just two of his 14 games as interim manager.

During that run, Carrick's side have beaten Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chesea and Liverpool so it would be a surprise if he failed to get the gig full-time.

Another win at the Stadium of Light would secure third place and United will fancy their chances with Sunderland in poor form.

The Black Cats didn't lose at home this term until Liverpool beat them in mid-February but their form has been poor of late and they've gone three without a win in the Premier League.

Their last game at the Stadium of Light was a 5-0 thumping by Nottingham Forest so Regis Le Bris will be looking for his side to make amends.

How the bookies view it: United to stay on a roll

With Manchester United in such good form, they're odds-on favourites for this one at a best 10/11 with Ladbrokes. Sunderland are as big as 3/1 with BetMGM and the draw pays 13/5 with Betfred.

Recent head to head: Sunder the thumb

Manchester United have dominated this fixture in recent years, winning five of the last six meetings. It ended in a 2-0 victory when the Red Devils hosted Sunderland earlier this season and they won 3-0 on their last visit to the Stadium of Light in 2017.

Players to watch: Mbeumo drought to impress

Bryan Mbeumo has gone 10 games without a goal for Manchester United and will be determined to end his drought. With Benjamin Sesko an injury doubt, he could play through the middle and is 6/5 at Paddy Power for a goal or assist. He's also a tempting 17/4 at Ladbrokes for over 1.5 efforts on target.

Brian Brobbey's physicality will pose problems for Manchester United's defence and the Dutchman is 17/10 at Paddy Power to score or assist. Backing him to net a header pays a healthy 8/1 at Bet365.

Probable line-ups

Sunderland have Dan Ballard suspended after the stopper's red card in the draw with Wolves. Romaine Mundle, Betrand Traore, Nilson Angulo and SImon Moore are set to miss out with injuries.

Carrick is sweating on the fitness of Sesko after a shin injury forced the striker off at half-time last weekend. There have also been reports from Brazil that United have agreed to rest Matheus Cunha in the last three games to keep him fully fit for the World Cup.

Sunderland: Roefs, Geertruda, Alderete, Reinildo, Mukiele, Sadiki, Xhaka, Le Fee, Talbi, Hume, Brobbey.

Manchester United: Lammens, Dalot, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw, Mainoo, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dorgu, Amad, Mbeumo.

Anything else catch the eye?

Although Manchester United are in good form, they could lose a bit of intensity with a Champions League slot secured. If Sesko and Cunha both miss out it also takes away a lot of their firepower so Sunderland look worth a punt in the double chance at evens with with SkyBet.

United skipper Bruno Fernandes is still chasing the Premier League assist record so he will have a bit of extra motivation in the final three games. The midfielder is 5/2 with Ladbrokes to take that tally to 20 here.

Sunderland picked up four yellows and a red last weekend and should show more intensity than Manchester United as they still have an outside chance of qualifying for Europe.

Backing the Black Cats at -1 in the card handicap pays 2/1 with Bet365 while over 2.5 Sunderland cards is 5/6 with the same firm.
