Colombia vs PeruCopa America, KO: 01:00 Jun 21, 2021, Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico Teixeira
Colombia face Peru at the Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico Teixeira in their third Group B fixture at Copa America. The Colombians will be keen to make a quick return to winning ways after their disappointment last time out and should edge this one.
Colombia were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Venezuela in their previous fixture in Group B. They squandered a string of good opportunities and failed to convert any of their 23 attempts on goal.
It was a disappointing result for Los Cafeteros but one positive for Reinaldo Rueda is the number of chances created by his team. The manager knows there is quality in the Colombian attack and they are unlikely to be as wasteful in Monday’s clash.
While their attack has been off colour lately, the Colombian defence has stood up to be counted. They have kept clean sheets in three of their last four matches, stretching back to before Copa America.
Peru were thrashed 4-0 by tournament favourites Brazil in their previous fixture in the competition. They were no match for the Brazilians, offering very little attacking threat and finishing with just two attempts on target.
Peru reached the final of the 2019 edition despite making a slow start and will be hopeful of bouncing back from their defeat in the opening fixture. However, they have not been at their best in recent times, suffering five defeats from their last six matches in all competitions.
Defending has been a problem for Ricardo Gareca’s side with eight goals conceded in their last three matches. Worse still is their forward line that has failed to find the net in four of their last five matches.
How the bookies view it
Colombia are considered overwhelming favourites by the bookies and priced at 8/11 by SBK to secure the win. A victory for Peru is valued at 26/5 by Vbet while a draw is set at odds of 27/10 by betfair.
Head to head
Colombia often come out on top in this fixture with 13 wins from 23 previous matches. Peru have been victorious just twice while both teams have battled to eight draws.
The Colombians have won the last three meetings, including a 3-0 victory in a South American World Cup qualifier earlier in June.
Players to watch
Colombia will be keen for their attacking players to finally show their quality in this year’s Copa America. Duvan Zapata is priced at 6/5 by Vbet to score anytime while his Atalanta strike partner Luis Muriel is valued at 8/5 by bet365 in the same market.
The Colombians have looked solid at the back with three clean sheets from their last four matches across all competitions. Yerry Mina and Davinson Sanchez are likely to partner in central defence and will be confident of another clean sheet at 11/10 with Paddy Power.
Anything else catch the eye?
Given their recent defensive record, Colombia could be backed to earn a win to nil at 16/11 with Vbet. A -1 handicap could also be considered at odds of 28/13 with Sport Nation.
A half time win for Colombia could be on the cards at 17/11 with Sport Nation. Peru's recent attacking problems mean they could be tipped not to score at 68/67 with Vbet.
