The National League betting column returns with three selections from Saturday’s card as we look to build on a 7.67% ROI for the season.
This week’s fixtures cover three different betting angles. Altrincham host AFC Hornchurch with both clubs looking to follow up victories from their latest matches. Aldershot Town face a Tamworth side whose nine league games have produced a steady flow of goals, while Southend United welcome Barrow to Roots Hall after scoring six at Gateshead.
Our analysis uses results alongside xG, xGA, shot volume, venue records and recent match reports. This helps separate repeatable performance from finishing streaks, misleading scorelines and short-term trends.
The three selections are ranked around the strength of the underlying evidence and the available prices. Each bet meets our minimum odds requirement, with the aim of protecting the season’s positive return while identifying value across Saturday’s National League schedule.
Altrincham v AFC Hornchurch
Altrincham return to Moss Lane with momentum after three consecutive 2-1 victories, the latest secured away at Fylde. AFC Hornchurch arrive following a 1-0 win over Scunthorpe United, although the scoreline offered a more flattering view of their defensive performance than the underlying action.
The visitors faced 10 shots and six on target in that victory, while producing six attempts and two on target. It was their second successive clean sheet, but neither performance removes the wider concern. Hornchurch allow 1.60 xGA and 12.2 shots per match, while their five away fixtures have averaged 3.40 goals. Four have cleared 2.5 goals.
Altrincham’s home record points in the same direction. All four league matches at Moss Lane have produced at least three goals, with both sides scoring each time. Their last three home results have finished 2-1, including Wednesday’s win over Hartlepool United.
The season-long process remains modest rather than dominant. Altrincham average 1.20 xG and allow 1.55 xGA, while Hornchurch produce 1.30 xG and concede 1.60 xGA. Combined, those figures produce a projected total above 2.5 goals. The shot data also leaves room for chances, with the teams allowing 23.4 attempts and 9.8 shots on target between them per game.
Hornchurch’s recent clean sheets create a reservation, but both came despite their opponents creating opportunities. Over 2.5 goals at 3/4 avoids requiring the visitors to score and is supported by the venue records, defensive process and Altrincham’s repeated 2-1 scorelines.
- Best bet: Over 2.5 goals at 3/4 with William Hill
Aldershot Town v Tamworth
Tamworth’s away matches have provided the division’s most reliable goals pattern, and their visit to Aldershot Town brings another test for a defence whose results remain stronger than its underlying numbers. Aldershot return home after losing 1-0 at Barrow, while Tamworth arrive following a 2-1 victory over Wealdstone.
All nine Tamworth league games have produced both teams to score and over 2.5 goals. Their five away fixtures have contained 24 goals, an average of 4.80, with Tamworth scoring eight and conceding 16. Every opponent has scored at least three times against them on the road.
The underlying figures explain the trend. Tamworth average 1.67 xG and 14 shots, providing enough attacking output to threaten in every fixture. Defensively, they allow 1.63 xGA and 6.3 shots on target per game. Their latest win was more controlled, limiting Wealdstone to four attempts, but one improved display does not outweigh the previous eight matches.
Aldershot’s home record provides the main objection. Three of their four home fixtures have stayed below 2.5 goals, while they have conceded only seven times all season. However, their 0.78 goals against average sits well below 1.41 xGA. They also allow 11.9 shots and 9.1 efforts from inside the box, suggesting their defensive results have benefited from wasteful finishing.
Aldershot average 1.33 xG and 4.4 shots on target, giving them a clear route through Tamworth’s defence. The selection follows Tamworth’s repeated match profile while allowing for regression in Aldershot’s defensive record.
- Best bet: Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 8/11 with Bet365
Southend United v Barrow
Roots Hall hosts a meeting between one of the division’s strongest attacks and a Barrow side beginning to recover from an uneven start. Southend United return home after dismantling Gateshead 6-1, while Barrow travel following consecutive clean-sheet victories over Solihull Moors and Aldershot Town.
Southend’s latest scoreline contained exceptional finishing, with 11 of their 12 shots hitting the target. A repeat of such efficiency should not be expected, but the wider process still supports them. They rank second for xGD at +0.61, averaging 1.84 xG and allowing 1.23 xGA. Their averages of 12.9 shots and 6.7 on target are backed by a positive shot differential.
Home form adds to the case. Southend have won three of four league games at Roots Hall, scoring eight goals. Their only defeat came against Kidderminster Harriers despite recording 18 shots to seven, with the result running against the balance of opportunities.
Barrow deserve respect after their recent improvement. They rank ninth for xGD at +0.26 and concede only 1.25 xGA per match. Their latest win over Aldershot was supported by an 11-7 shot advantage, while two consecutive clean sheets point towards better organisation.
The visitors remain less convincing in attack. They average 1.22 goals from 1.51 xG and have failed to score in two of their last three away matches. Southend have scored in every league fixture and average 2.56 goals overall. The straight win is preferred to a handicap because Barrow’s underlying record makes a wide margin less secure.
