Bet 1 – Portugal vs Wales – Thursday 24th September at 8pm
Portugal should open their Nations League title defence with a victory over Wales in Lisbon.
The hosts were not at their dominant best during the World Cup, but their underlying numbers remained positive. Portugal generated 7.02 xG and allowed 5.84 xGA across five matches, scoring eight goals and conceding three.
Their campaign ended with a narrow 1-0 defeat against eventual champions Spain in the round of 16. That performance showed Portugal could remain competitive against the strongest opposition, even when their attack failed to convert its opportunities.
Wales have produced encouraging results under Craig Bellamy, including a 7-1 victory over North Macedonia and a competitive display away to Belgium. Their record against stronger opponents still raises concerns.
They lost both World Cup qualifiers against Belgium, conceding eight goals across 4-3 and 4-2 defeats. Wales then struggled to create enough during their play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina, drawing 1-1 before losing on penalties.
Bellamy also travels without Harry Wilson, Nathan Broadhead and Rubin Colwill, reducing his attacking options. Joe Rodon, Dylan Lawlor and Karl Darlow are unavailable from the defensive group.
Wales are expected to defend in a 5-4-1 shape, but Portugal possess the passing quality to control territory and move the visitors' defensive block. Joao Cancelo and Nuno Mendes provide width, while Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix should find space around Cristiano Ronaldo.
