Posted up a wee bit of info about the start of the A league on Monday yesterday, what teams I thought would have decent seasons etc and on the back of that I’ve picked out a couple of antepodt bets I like the chances of. I said yesterday I thought Melbourne victory would have a decent season this year, they had a few good results in the AFC champions league group stages at the beginning of the month and managed to qualify for the next round. They’ve managed to sign 3 players from the championship in England that will be known to most British guys, Calum mcmanaman, Jacob butterfield and Rudy gestede and these 3 should do well in the A league in their respective positions, as long as they get themselves fit and don’t treat it as an end of career jolly in the sun. Always hard to predict how teams will fare before a ball is kicked especially with new players and a fairly new coach (grant brebner got the job in late January, league was shut down in April) but I think the men from Victoria will have a decent campaign and make the playoffs. I’ve done well with this type of bet the past 3 seasons backing Adelaide, Wellington and western United all to finish top 6 and they all duly obliged. At slightly odds on it’s not the type of bet to just lob a point or 2 on, no one wants to wait 6 months to just barely double their money so it’s a double NAP stake for me.

Next one involves the central coast mariners. When I first got into the A league I developed a soft spot for them, they had decent players and played really nice football under John aloisi scored plenty of goals and were a great team for corners but just couldn’t keep clean sheets and more often than not lost- and heavily. Not much has changed since those days (although they don’t play as easy on the eye football anymore) and they have been bottom dogs 4 out the last 5 seasons. With the smallest budget in the league and constantly losing any decent players they get in to the other teams in the league I can only see them struggling again, their squad looks woefully short in all areas and their new overseas signings are unknown and a shot in the dark. I think we’ll see them down the bottom again this year.

A good day yesterday was brought down with a poor late show in Bolivia which featured a total lack of corners.
