This weekend’s EFL betting selections focus on three matches where the early results are supported by clear differences in the underlying data.
Birmingham City travel to Derby County after responding twice to earn a draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Sheffield Wednesday return to Hillsborough with four wins from five, while Wigan Athletic need a response following a heavy home defeat. Huddersfield Town also take an unbeaten record to Mansfield Town, who have lost their last two matches without scoring.
The analysis uses xG, xGA, xPTS, shots on target and big chances alongside the match reports. Recent results have also been checked for misleading scorelines, individual errors and performances which went against the balance of chances.
Derby County vs Birmingham City
Birmingham City travel to Pride Park after showing resilience in a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers. They fell behind twice during a four-goal first half but responded through Jay Stansfield and a Jackson Tchatchoua own goal. Adam Armstrong later missed a clear opportunity to win it for Wolves.
Derby County need a response after losing 3-0 at West Ham United. Joel Piroe scored after six minutes, with Derby remaining within one goal until two late strikes made the result decisive. It continued an inconsistent start in which John Eustace's side have collected five points from five matches.
The underlying figures favour Birmingham. Derby average 0.83 xG while allowing 2.19 xGA, leaving them with one of the Championship's weakest expected-goal differences. Their defensive average rises to 2.63 xGA at Pride Park, where Swansea City scored three and Cardiff City created 2.26 xG.
Birmingham average 1.35 xG and 1.33 xGA. Their away defensive record is stronger, with 0.83 xGA allowed per game. They have also shown different routes to goal, scoring through open play, crosses and set pieces.
Chris Davies praised Birmingham's energy and pressure after their draw with Southampton, when he felt his team deserved more. Similar intensity should trouble a Derby side allowing 6.6 shots on target per match.
The 126/100 price implies a 44.2% chance of an away victory. Birmingham's stronger balance and Derby's defensive numbers support a higher assessment.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Wigan Athletic
Sheffield Wednesday welcome Wigan Athletic after extending their perfect away record with a 2-1 victory at Peterborough United. A Josh Feeney own goal opened the scoring before Yan Valery struck the winner after Peterborough had equalised.
Wigan enter the match following a damaging 4-0 home defeat against Stockport County. Three goals inside the opening 21 minutes decided the contest before a fourth arrived late on. Wigan have now lost four of their opening five league games.
Wednesday have generated 2.45 xG per match, the highest average in League One, while scoring 13 goals. Their home output stands at 3.00 xG per game, supported by 6.8 shots on target across their full schedule.
The 7-2 victory over Bromley inflates those totals, but Wednesday's wider record remains strong. They generated 2.70 xG at Leyton Orient and 2.56 at Wycombe, winning both matches 2-1. Henrik Pedersen spoke earlier in the campaign about his players learning how to win matches again, and four victories from five show progress in this area.
Wigan's results are worse than their 2.08 xG average suggests. They produced 1.83 xG against Leyton Orient and 2.58 against AFC Wimbledon but failed to score in both games. They have recorded three blanks and remain without a clean sheet, conceding 11 goals from 1.77 xGA per match.
The selection covers every Sheffield Wednesday victory apart from 1-0. Their attacking production and Wigan's defensive record support at least two match goals.

Mansfield Town vs Huddersfield Town
Mansfield Town return home after consecutive defeats against Reading and Bradford City. The first was a 5-0 loss in which Reading generated 2.86 xG from 20 shots. Mansfield then lost 1-0 at Bradford after creating the opening opportunity but failing to convert.
Huddersfield Town remain unbeaten following a 1-1 draw with Notts County. Marcus Harness gave them an early lead before a failed punch from goalkeeper Matty Young presented Notts County with their equaliser. The dropped points came through an individual error rather than sustained defensive pressure.
The visitors have produced one of League One's strongest profiles. Huddersfield average 1.90 xG and 6.6 shots on target, scoring 10 goals without recording a blank. They also allow 1.09 xGA and 2.6 shots on target per game.
Their away performances have been less dominant but remain solid. Huddersfield average 1.70 xG on the road and have scored in both matches. Their 2-1 win at Cambridge went against the xG balance, although a 1-1 draw at Milton Keynes Dons produced an even chance profile.
Mansfield average 1.12 xG while allowing 1.51 xGA. They have conceded 11 goals, kept no clean sheets and failed to score twice. Their five-goal victory over Luton Town also came from 1.96 xG, so the result overstates their usual attacking output.
Huddersfield hold the advantage for xG, xGA, shots on target and defensive reliability. Odds of 11/10 imply a 47.6% chance of an away win, leaving value in the visitors.
