Two winners from three selections at the weekend delivered another profitable return, and the focus now shifts to the midweek EFL schedule.

This article covers one match from each division, beginning with Cheltenham against York City in League Two. The opening three rounds have produced a sizeable gap between the teams across xPTS, xG and chance creation, with the relevant home and away splits adding further context.

In League One, Wycombe face Sheffield Wednesday in a meeting between two sides whose early results do not fully show the difference in their underlying performances. Wednesday lead the division across several key measures, although Wycombe’s first home display deserves respect.

The Championship selection comes from Turf Moor, where Burnley meet Middlesbrough. Both clubs were expected to challenge near the top of the table, but their opening performances have moved in opposite directions. Burnley’s defensive record is under pressure, while Middlesbrough have created chances consistently and possess one of the division’s most productive forwards.

Three matches, three different markets and each selection supported by current results, xG and venue-specific data.

Cheltenham vs York City

York City look well placed to justify favouritism when they travel to Cheltenham, with the early underlying numbers showing a clear gap between the sides.

York rank third in League Two for xPTS with 5.13 from their opening three matches. Cheltenham sit 22nd on 2.70, giving the visitors an advantage of 2.43 expected points at this stage.

The difference is also clear in the xG data. York have generated 5.56 xG while allowing 4.02 xGA, producing a positive difference of 1.54 and a ratio of 58%. Cheltenham have recorded 2.63 xG against 5.19 xGA. Their negative difference of 2.56 leaves them with the second-worst xG ratio in the division at 34%.

The relevant venue splits strengthen the argument. Cheltenham produced only 0.42 xG in their first home match while allowing 2.43 xGA. York generated 2.19 xG in their opening away fixture and conceded chances worth 0.83 xGA.

York also lead League Two for shots on target, recording 18 while allowing seven. Their 10 big chances are the highest total in the division. Cheltenham have managed four and conceded six.

Cheltenham have conceded in every league match and allowed at least two goals twice. York have scored in all three and created enough chances to continue that run. At 1/1, York City to win is the selection.

Wycombe vs Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday’s opening performances make them an appealing bet for their trip to Wycombe.

Wednesday lead League One for xPTS with 7.30 from three matches. Their 8.83 xG is the highest total in the division, while only 2.71 xGA has been allowed at the other end. That gives them an xG difference of 6.12 and a league-leading ratio of 77%.

The supporting chance data is equally strong. Wednesday rank first for shots on target, recording 22 and conceding nine. They have also produced 41 shots inside the box while allowing 15, alongside 14 big chances created and eight conceded.

Wycombe sit 14th for xPTS with 4.12. They have generated 4.87 xG and allowed 5.17 xGA, leaving them with a negative difference and a 49% ratio. Their shots inside the box figures are also below average, with 23 attempts for and 30 against.

The away numbers provide further encouragement. Wednesday generated 2.80 xG in their first match on the road while conceding 0.88 xGA. They scored twice, produced four big chances and restricted their opponent to one goal.

Wycombe’s first home display was stronger, returning 2.26 xG against 0.93 xGA, so this is not a selection based only on the league table. The case comes from Wednesday leading the division across the main performance measures.

The 13/8 price implies a 38.1% chance of an away win. Sheffield Wednesday’s attacking volume and defensive control support a higher probability, making them the selection.

Burnley vs Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough’s attacking numbers and Burnley’s defensive problems support the visitors scoring at least twice at Turf Moor.

Boro have scored six goals across their opening three Championship matches, finding the net twice against Lincoln and Blackburn before putting three past West Brom. They have generated 6.17 xG, averaging 2.06 per match, and rank second in the division with an xG ratio of 67%.

Their chance production has been consistent. Middlesbrough have recorded 41 shots inside the box, 16 shots on target and 13 big chances. Those figures rank third, seventh and third respectively across the Championship.

Burnley have conceded nine goals in three games, with West Ham, West Brom and Norwich all scoring at least twice. Their defensive return is supported by 6.10 xGA, 15 shots on target allowed and 10 big chances conceded. Nicky Hayen admitted Burnley lacked defensive solutions after the defeat at West Brom, before describing their start at Norwich as poor following two goals conceded inside five minutes.

Will Lankshear provides a clear threat through the middle. The summer signing has scored six times in five appearances across all competitions, including doubles against Lincoln and West Brom. Middlesbrough also have Morgan Whittaker and Riley McGree supporting him, although Jeremy Sarmiento’s availability needs monitoring after he was forced off against Albion.

Burnley are expected to replace the suspended Josh Laurent with Mike Tresor, while Zian Flemming’s expected departure changes their attacking structure. Neither change addresses the defensive numbers.
