The Championship season is only two games old, but several teams are already under pressure to turn promising performances into points.

Norwich and Burnley meet with neither side having registered a league win, while West Ham travel to Watford after creating far more than their early results suggest.

Wolves have made a stronger start, but their home game against winless Stoke still demands a closer look beyond the league table.

With sample sizes still small, the scorelines only tell part of the story. The early xG, shot and big-chance figures highlight defensive weaknesses, wasteful finishing and several performances which deserved different outcomes.

We have analysed the underlying data to find the strongest angle from each of these three Championship fixtures.

Norwich City vs Burnley

Over 2.5 goals looks the best bet when Norwich City host Burnley, with all four league matches involving these sides clearing the line.

Norwich lost 2-1 at home to West Brom before a 3-0 defeat at Millwall. Jose Cordoba’s dismissal affected the second result, but Norwich were already 2-0 behind and had struggled throughout. They have conceded five goals from 5.15 xGA, with both opponents creating at least two big chances.

Their only home match produced 4.80 combined xG. Norwich recorded 2.58 xG, 20 shots, seven shots on target and five big chances against West Brom, while allowing 2.22 xG at the other end. Those figures show attacking potential alongside clear defensive problems.

Burnley drew 2-2 with West Ham before losing 3-1 at West Brom. Their goal at The Hawthorns came through a Callum Styles own goal, while Albion’s third arrived from a penalty, but Burnley were still outplayed and Nicky Hayen admitted his side lacked energy and defensive solutions.

The visitors have conceded five goals from 3.57 xGA and allowed seven shots on target in their first away match. Zian Flemming’s availability also matters, with Burnley winless in 10 league games without him since the start of last season.

Both defences look vulnerable, while Norwich’s home attacking data offers enough for them to contribute. Over 2.5 goals is the selection.

Watford vs West Ham

Watford host West Ham on Saturday, with the visitors still searching for their first league win despite producing stronger performances than their results suggest.

West Ham generated 2.10 xG in their opening 2-2 draw with Burnley before creating 2.84 xG in a 2-1 defeat at Charlton. They produced four big chances in the second game, allowed only one and also missed a penalty. Across the two matches, West Ham have scored three goals from 4.94 xG, leaving a sizeable gap between the quality of their chances and their finishing return.

Watford’s opening victory against Southampton failed to provide the same encouragement. They won 2-1 despite losing the xG battle 1.71 to 0.81, allowing three big chances and recording only 34% possession. Southampton produced 17 shots and 11 attempts inside the box, showing Watford’s defence gave up enough opportunities for a stronger attacking side to punish them.

West Ham are averaging 2.47 xG across their opening two matches and have scored twice in one of them. Their four big chances and missed penalty at Charlton strengthen the view their attack is creating enough to improve on its current output.

Watford’s defensive numbers leave them exposed against a visiting side generating chances at this rate. West Ham to score over 1.5 goals is the selection.

Wolves vs Stoke City

Wolves host Stoke after taking four points from their opening two Championship matches, while the visitors arrive without a point following defeats against Swansea and Southampton.

The underlying numbers support the difference in results. Wolves are averaging 1.79 xG and only 0.82 xGA, giving them a positive supremacy of 0.97 per game. They have also produced 17 shots and 11.5 efforts inside the box per match while allowing their opponents only 0.5 big chances.

Their opening home game against Blackburn finished 2-2, but Wolves controlled most of the key indicators. They generated 1.89 xG, took 18 shots and allowed only 0.89 xGA. A 3-1 victory at Preston followed, with Wolves creating three big chances and recording 14 shots inside the box.

Stoke have lost 2-1 at home to Swansea and 3-1 away to Southampton. They are averaging only 0.94 xG while allowing 1.75 xGA, with six goals conceded across those two defeats. Their first away performance was particularly weak defensively, allowing Southampton 2.43 xG, 18 shots and three big chances.

Every league match involving either side has produced at least three goals. Wolves have scored two or more in both games, while Stoke have conceded at least twice in each. The hosts hold the stronger attacking and defensive profile, making Wolves to win and over 1.5 match goals the selection.
