Freiburg vs. Werder Bremen (2:30pm)
Following a disappointing end to last season, in which Freiburg lost the Europa League final, the Breisgau Brazilians now look even stronger at the start of the new campaign.
Freiburg secured their place in the UECL with two commanding victories, and a week ago they got off to a flying start in the DFB-Pokal. They now host Werder Bremen and are certainly favourites to win, having beaten them in seven of their last eight head-to-head encounters.
It is difficult to gauge the visitors’ form following their poor finish to last season, so I will certainly be backing Freiburg to win.

Augsburg vs. Schalke (4:30pm)
Augsburg should be motivated to build on their best season in the last 10 years, with their first challenge being the returning seven-time champions Schalke, who spent three years in the lower divisions.
This will be a rather interesting clash given the two teams’ playing styles. I’m curious to see how Schalke will play, having won the 2. Bundesliga convincingly, but also having been one of the lowest-scoring champions in history.
In my view, it’s quite possible we’ll see a low-scoring match, and a draw is also quite likely. Augsburg had a strong end to the season, but they’ve never been a consistently strong side. Schalke will be keen to get off to the best possible start.
