Why Ruben Amorim Man Utd manager odds were slashed today

After an incredible start to the 2024/25 campaign and a confident 2-0 away win for Sporting CP against SK Sturm Graz in the Champions League yesterday evening, the latest Ruben Amorim Man Utd manager odds have significantly shortened.

Here, we’ll explore what they’ve been cut to, why and how likely it is that Sporting CP’s current coach will replace Erik ten Hag.

Latest Ruben Amorim Man Utd manager odds news

The odds against Amorim taking over from Erik ten Hag (currently our pick in the ‘next manager sacked’ odds market) have been cut to 5/1. This leaves him as second favourite behind former Man United player and current assistant manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Portuguese giants and reigning Primeira Liga champions are riding high after a perfect eight-game start to the league campaign, while also winning in two of their first three UEFA Champions League (UCL) tests. Impressively, those eight league games saw a total of 27 goals from the Lions, and just two going in at the wrong end.

Despite being widely linked to a move away back in the summer, Viktor Gyökeres is still clearly focused on plying his trade for Sporting, having notched 11 league goals already, with a further two in the Champions League. He has dominated defences in every one of his matches so far, and continually reflects Amorim’s tactical know-how and awareness.

‘Burning desire' gives Amorim a competitive edge

The club’s recent success has been greatly attributed to Amorim’s flexibility, hard work and burning desire to win, with the club now winning the Primeira Liga title twice under his leadership – they also won it in 2020/21, with just one league defeat all season. It is therefore no surprise that the club has started so brightly once again, and looks poised to make a push for consecutive league titles, as they already sit three points ahead of closest rivals Porto.

Amorim was contacted over the West Ham job following David Moyes’ summer departure from the club, and even entered negotiations for the role. But he turned down the offer and resolved to continue his position with Sporting. It is therefore clear that the offer has to be right for Amorim to be willing to leave his current role, and with the current turmoil at Man United, he may be difficult to convince.

A two-horse race with Ruud

With Gareth Southgate placed at a relatively distant 9/1 to take the helm at Old Trafford, it appears to be a two-horse race between Amorim and van Nistelrooy. A win last weekend against high-flying Brentford may have saved ten Hag’s job for the near future, but with the club enduring their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign and sitting in 12th place, the Dutchman’s days with the Red Devils may be numbered.

One thing is for certain though – Amorim has a fantastic track record of consistency, and that is something which United have sorely lacked in recent years. In turn, INEOS will see him as a fantastic candidate to restore the club’s slowly dwindling identity.
