Tottenham Hotspur vs Luton Town

, KO: 15:00 Mar 30, 2024, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Luton Town

LUTON TOWN find themselves out of the Premier League drop zone once more but still have a massive fight on their hands to avoid relegation, starting with this trip to a Tottenham Hotspur side chasing a Champions League place.

Nottingham Forest's points deduction has seen them fall just a single point behind the Hatters and the fight for survival promises to be fascinating with Everton and Brentford also far from safe and second-bottom Burnley finally showing some signs of life.

Everyone expected Rob Edwards' side to be propping up the table after Luton Town's remarkable play-off win last year saw them go from non-league football to England's top table inside a decade.

The Hatters have defied the prophets of doom but if they're to complete an improbable mission and stay in the Premier League they will need to start getting some wins on the board again.

It's now nine games without a victory for Luton Town although their form has picked up a little bit, with draws against Crystal Palace and Forest in their last three outings.

Tottenham are heavy favourites to keep Luton's winless run going and Spurs are looking to bounce back from a terrible 3-0 loss at Fulham before the international break.

Ange Postecoglou's side headed into that game on a high after a brilliant 4-0 victory away to Aston Villa, the team who currently occupy fourth place in the table.

But that loss at Craven Cottage, which busted the coupon of our man Slips Tips, has left Tottenham Hotspur sitting three points behind Villa, albeit with a game in hand.

So this is the kind of match Spurs need to win if they're to seal that lucrative Champions League slot and provide some tangible success for Postecoglou in his debut campaign.

How the bookies view it

Luton Town have been written off again and BetUK have them at a whopping 23/2 for a win in North London. Tottenham Hotspur are just 1/5 with most firms while the draw pays 7/1 at Bet365.

Recent head to head

Tottenham Hotspur won 1-0 at Kenilworth Road earlier in the season and netted their winner with just 10 men after Yves Bissouma had been sent off. That was the first meeting of these clubs since 1991, with Luton Town losing 4-1 on their visit to White Hart Lane. You have to go all the way back to 1985 for the Hatters' last win away to Spurs.

Players to watch

James Maddison will be in fine fettle for Spurs after impressing for England off the bench in their friendly draw against Belgium in midweek. The playmaker is 9/4 with SkyBet for anytime scorer while Bet365 price him at 13/8 for an assist.

With Tottenham Hotspur playing a high defensive line, the pace of Chiedozie Ogbene will be a dangerous weapon for Luton Town. The Irish international is 2/1 with Bet365 to either score or assist and that could be worth a punt.

Anything else catch the eye?

We only saw one goal when these sides last faced off but the first-half red card for Spurs changed the dynamic of that game and the stats suggest goals at both ends in this one. BTTS has landed in 12 of the last 13 games for Luton while we've seen over 2.5 goals in the last seven for Tottenham Hotspur.

That's why over 2.5 strikes is a tiny 1/4 with most firms for this one while BTTS is only a little better at a best 13/20 with Midnite. It's hard finding value in the goals market but backing a strike in the first 10 minutes pays 12/5 at Bet365.

Stats bets offer better value for punters and I'm tempted by the 13/8 on offer at SkyBet for over 3.5 Luton Town offsides. Over 5.5 match offsides is also 6/4 with the same firm.

Backing Luton's Issa Kaboure for a card could pay off with the defender picking up three yellows in his last five outings. He's 23/10 at Unibet to go in the book again here.

We've seen 13 corners or more in the last four games for Luton Town so that's another market worth exploring. Backing over 11.5 corners pays just under evens at 19/20 with Unibet.
