St Mirren vs Aberdeen

, KO: 17:15 Nov 28, 2020, Simple Digital Arena
Aberdeen

ST MIRREN and Aberdeen have both savoured League Cup glory in the last decade and their fans will be dreaming of a return to Hampden when the sides face off in what is arguably the pick of the last-16 ties.

The Dons lifted the trophy in 2014 and have enjoyed a great record in both domestic cups since then, reaching four semi-finals and three finals. In the last four seasons, only Celtic and Motherwell have defeated the Dons in normal time in a cup tie so they will travel to Paisley full of confidence.

St Mirren's cup record since their 2013 triumph is far less impressive, with two Scottish Cup quarter-finals as far as they have gone, and they have been particularly poor in the League Cup.

They have failed to get beyond the group stage in three of the last five seasons but Saints head into this tie in decent form, having gone six games without defeat in all competitions.

In contrast, Aberdeen have won just two of their last six games and could only draw at rock-bottom Hamilton in midweek after being thrashed 4-0 at Rangers last weekend in a game where our man Slips Tips cashed in.

Derek McInnes is still without a few top-team stars so this promises to be an even cup tie that could be decided by one mistake or one moment of magic.

How the bookies view it

Despite their recent form dip, the Dons are odds-on favourites for this one at 17/20 with McBookie while St Mirren are as big as 4/1 with Skybet. The draw at 90 minutes is 13/5 at Bet365 and that's a decent option.

I fancy Aberdeen to qualify but the price isn't great at 4/9 with Bet365 while the Buddies are 9/4 at Skybet to go through.

Recent head to head

Aberdeen are unbeaten in their last four against St Mirren and have bossed this fixture. They have only lost once in their last 24 matches against the Buddies and that probably explains why their odds are so short.

But the head-to-head in Paisley was even last season, with the Buddies winning once, the Dons once and the other match ending in a draw. One of those matches was a Scottish Cup tie which the Pittodrie side won 2-0 (below).

Team news

Aberdeen are decimated in midfield, with Lewis Ferguson, Ross McCrorie, Dylan McGeouch and Connor McLennan missing out, while winger Jonny Hayes isn't quite ready to return and striker Marley Watkins is a long-term absentee.

St Mirren only look set to be without defender Joe Shaughnessy, who is suspended after a red card against Queen's Park in their last League Cup game.

Players to watch

Dons striker Sam Cosgrove should be match fit after starting the last four games following a long injury lay-off. He has netted six times against St Mirren for the Dons so is worth a punt in the anytime scorer market at 11/10 with McBookie.

Jon Obika has scored in St Mirren's last two League Cup games and looks their best bet for a goal. The striker is 11/5 with McBookie to find the net and that seems a bit overpriced.

Anything else catch the eye?

Recent meetings in Paisley have been quite tight, with the last three all having under 2.5 goals. I can see a repeat here, especially with Aberdeen without some of their best players. Under 2.5 goals pays 3/5 with BetVictor while betting against a goal in each half also appeals at 4/5 with Betfair, with the price a bit shorter at 4/6 with William Hill.

All three goals came after the break when these sides faced off at Pittodrie earlier in the season so go for the second half to be the highest scoring at 6/5 with Bet365.

This match between St Mirren and Aberdeen will be played on Nov 28, 2020 and kick off at 17:15. Check below for our tipsters best St Mirren vs Aberdeen prediction. You may also visit our dedicated betting previews section for the most up to date previews.
