Benfica have already proven they can beat Real Madrid, but this time they will be without Jose Mourinho on the sidelines after the Portuguese coach received a red card.

History points to a victory for Real Madrid, who have only lost once in the last 23 times they have won the first leg.

There is no doubt that Benfica are in good form, but they have not played at the Santiago Bernabeu, where Los Blancos have six consecutive wins and only two losses in 16 games this season (W14).

Interestingly, Real Madrid lost to Osasuna over the weekend, despite playing with their best lineup. It remains to be seen whether this will affect them or motivate them even more.

How the bookies view it: Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is always an advantage

Bookmakers understand how difficult it is to beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, but they are still taking Benfica's earlier success into account.

Los Blancos are heavy favourites at 1/2, while Benfica are available at 5/1. If you want to bet on a draw, you can do so at 4/1.

Recent head-to-head: A win each in the UCL this season

Although both teams are regulars in the Champions League, this season marked their first-ever meeting since the competition was revamped from the European Cup.

Benfica won 4-2 in a phenomenal clash in the League Phase, but lost 1-0 after a goal from Vinicius Jr. last week.

Players to watch: Vinicius will try to punish Benfica

We can't expect anything less than a goal from Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian was at the centre of attention after his goal and the alleged racism scandal, and he will certainly want to punish Benfica even more.

Even without these factors, Vinicius is in his best form since the start of the season, scoring five goals in his last four games. The season wasn't ideal up to this point in terms of numbers, but he is back to his old self and hungry for more.

Probable line-ups

Real Madrid: Courtois, Carreras, Alaba, Asencio, Carvajal, Camavinga, Tchouameni, Guler, Valverde, Vinicius Jr., Mbappe

Benfica: Trubin, Bah, Otamendi, Silva, Neto, Barrenechea, Rios, Lukebakio, Rafa, Schjelderup, Pavlidis

Anything else catch the eye?

Last week's football celebrations were marred by racism scandals and questionable decisions by referees. An investigation is still ongoing into whether Gianluca Prestianni insulted Vinicius Junior.

And yesterday, it was decided that Fede Valverde's foul on Dahl, for which Benfica filed an official complaint, did not deserve a red card.

Add to that the scandals involving Mourinho, and we can expect a very tough and tense clash. This immediately points us to the card markets, where we expect to see a lot again.

We certainly expect Real Madrid to advance and do so with at least two goals. Los Blancos have scored at least twice in each of their last six home wins.
