Rangers vs St Mirren

, KO: 15:00 Dec 3, 2023, Ibrox
St Mirren

RANGERS return to Premiership action on Sunday when they welcome St Mirren to Ibrox.

Philippe Clement's new charges were booed off the park when they failed to defeat Aris Limassol for the second time on Thursday which cost them automatic qualification for the next round of the Europa League.

The Belgian coach remains unbeaten since his arrival in Glasgow although last week Rangers needed a controversial injury time VAR penalty to save themselves from defeat at Aberdeen.

Alarmingly for a team whose mentality has been questioned before, that's two games in a row where they have come up short where the rewards were lucrative – a win at Aberdeen last week would have really put the pressure on a Celtic team who had drawn against Motherwell.

And they were surprisingly exposed at the back in both games and Saints will hope to try and exploit that.

However, after an outstanding start to the season where third place and European spot were seen as a realistic target, the wheels have come off somewhat.

Stephen Robinson's side's problems all seem to be when they are on their travels outside Paisley. Their midweek defeat at Ross County followed up a 4-0 trouncing at Dundee in their last game away from home and it's a worrying trend.

They've won just two games since September and both of them were at home.

How the bookies view it

Rangers are 1/5 mostly although Coral go 2/9 on a home win.

St Mirren can be backed at 14/1 with the same firm – oddly it's exactly the same odds as they have for Celtic to win at St Johnstone!

The draw is 11/2 with 888sport.

Recent head to heads

Rangers romped to a 3-0 win in Paisley this season but in fairness Saints were reduced to ten men in the 28th minute when Ryan Strain was sent off.

In fact, Rangers have now won the last three meetings between the sides by three-goal margins. St Mirren's last win at Ibrox came in 1992.

Players to watch

Who else but James Tavernier with the ‘penalty to Rangers' phrase in serious danger of entering the Oxford English Dictionary….
He is 7/4 to score anytime with bet365.

Jonah Ayunga is back fit again for Saints and he is 13/2 to score anytime with UniBet.

Anything else catch the eye?

It's hard to see anything else here than a routine Rangers win despite their recent hiccups. St Mirren have gone off the boil recently and have a real problem with away games.

They did run Celtic very close at Parkhead and only lost 2-1, but they've only netted one goal in their last three games and Rangers could and should win this to nil at 17/20 with McBookie.com

Rangers have reacted well after their European exploits – they have won all four of matches they have played after a Europa League game.

Clement wasn't happy at the way they started the game at Aberdeen or Aris and they will be under orders to make a fast start. Back them to score more first half goals than in the second half at 2/1 with bet365.
