There aren’t many teams capable of stopping Bayern Munich in their current form, especially on a day when the Bavarians are playing their own game, but Bodo/Glimt – the darlings of every neutral football fan – have proved that it takes something special to beat them.
Bayern Munich took their first misstep in the Bundesliga and, although they didn’t lose to Schalke, the standard and expectations within the squad are so high that even a draw feels like a defeat.
But Vincent Kompany is certainly far more interested in a strong start in the Champions League, having tried to rest his star players Harry Kane and Michael Olise. Both did come on in the second half against Schalke, but failed to provide the Bavarians with enough of a boost to secure victory.
Bodo/Glimt have returned to the big time after dominating the qualifiers and knocking out Royale Union SG and Nijmegen. Every football fan remembers what they achieved last spring.
Bodo beat Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, knocked out Inter Milan with two wins, and were even on course to see off Sporting as well, before suffering a heavy defeat away from home.
Such results sound almost impossible to replicate, but the fact is that Bodo/Glimt operate at the very highest level and the team is capable of springing a surprise even against the very best.
How the bookies view it: Bayern can’t afford to underestimate Bodo
It comes as no surprise that the bookmakers are giving Bayern a clear advantage, but Bodo have been in a similar situation on numerous occasions and have proven that being the underdogs doesn’t faze them.
At the moment, you can back Bayern at 1/10, whilst Bodo/Glimt are available at 20/1, which is certainly a value option. A draw is priced at roughly 9/1.
Recent head-to-head: The Bavarians are unbeaten against Norwegian teams
Bodo/Glimt made their Champions League debut last season, so there’s no way they’ve ever played against Bayern Munich.
Generally speaking, the Bavarians have never lost to a Norwegian side, whilst Bodo have never beaten a German side, although they did take a point away at Dortmund a year ago.
Players to watch: Michael Olise is inevitable
Bayern Munich broke all manner of scoring records last season, and there’s no doubt they’ll do so again with an attacking trio featuring Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Díaz.
The Englishman remains the world’s top goalscorer, but for that very reason the bookmakers are offering virtually no odds on his goals. That’s why I usually pick one of the other two.
In this case, I reckon Olise has made a stronger start to the season, and overall, he’ll have the ball a significant proportion of the time against Bodo. I expect to see his name on the scoresheet, but the question is whether it will be for a goal or an assist. There’s nothing to stop him doing both either.
Probable line-ups
Bayern Munich: Neuer, Davies, Upamecano, Min-Jae, Laimer, Kimmich, Pavlovic, Diaz, Saibari, Olise, Kane
Bodo/Glimt: Haikin, Sjovold, Nielsen, Bjortuft, Bjorkan, Fet, Berg, Auklend, Helmersen, Blomberg, Hauge
Anything else catch the eye?
What has been evident since the start of the season is that Bayern Munich’s defence is not impenetrable. Their strength remains in attack, and a high-scoring match is expected, as always.
But in my view, Bodo/Glimt won’t sit back for the full 90 minutes, unlike Schalke at the weekend, for example, and they could well score themselves.
I reckon the Bavarians will try to start the match strongly and will most likely apply serious pressure in the opening minutes. That’s why I reckon there’s a chance we’ll see an early corner, and I’ll be backing the market for a corner before 7:00 at 17/20. But treat this as a bonus bet, not a main prediction.
