Peru vs Uruguay

, KO: 02:30 Oct 12, 2024, Estadio Nacional de Lima
Uruguay

Uruguay will be looking to return to winning ways in World Cup 2026 qualifying when they pay Peru a visit in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Marcelo Bielsa’s team have dropped down to third place in the table following a pair of back-to-back draws with both Paraguay and Venezuela respectively.

That being said, the Sky Blue have avoided defeat in each of their last six World Cup qualifiers.

Seeking to halt their two game winless run, Uruguay will look to put Peru to the sword at the Estadio Nacional de Lima this weekend.

The White and Red are without a win in eight matches and as a result find themselves rooted to the foot of the South American standings.

Jorge Fossati’s side had earned two of their current three point tally before being edged out 1-0 by Ecuador in their last outing.

How the bookies view it: Bielsa’s boys to get back on track

Uruguay are 19/20 favourites with Bet 365 to land all three points in Lima. Given Peru's current injury problems, Bielsa’s side hold plenty of appeal to get back up and running with a win this weekend.

Peru are as big as 16/5 on Betano to pick up their first win of the campaign, while a point apiece has been priced up at 21/10 with the same oddsmaker.

Head to head: Peru record pretty poor

Peru have failed to get the better of Uruguay in nine of the last 11 overall meetings between the pair. It’s also worth pointing out that the hosts have fallen short in each of their last four fixtures with the Sky Blue.

Players to watch: Nunez to notch?

Darwin Nunez boasts an impressive return of 13 goals in 29 appearances for his country. Thus, the all-action striker stands out at 5/2 on PaddyPower for an anytime strike on Saturday.

Veteran midfielder Horacio Calcaterra has been recalled to the Peru team and he could be worth considering for a card at 5/2 with Coral.

Predicted line-ups

Peru have an extremely busy treatment room at present so that could force manager Fossati to field a patched-up starting XI on Saturday.

Uruguay can no longer look to legendary forward Luis Suarez for inspiration following his retirement from international football last month, however the aforementioned Nunez is available again after having his post Copa America suspension lifted, at least temporarily.

Peru: Gallesse; M Araujo, Zambrano, Callens; Advincula, Cartagena, Calcaterra, Pena, Lopez; Valera, Flores

Uruguay: Rochet; Nandez, Varela, Bueno, Saracchi; Valverde, Ugarte, De Arrascaeta; Pellistri, Nunez, M Araujo

Anything else catch the eye?

Uruguay are 10/11 on Bet 365 to hit over four corners during this World Cup qualifier and that looks worthy of interest.

Bielsa’s side have racked up five or more flag-kicks in each of their last three World Cup qualifiers, including eight in their most recent assignment with Venezuela.

Peru, meanwhile, conceded 10 and eight corners in their previous two contests with both Colombia and Ecuador respectively, which would suggest that there is plenty of scope for the Sky Blue to cover the 5+ line in Lima.
