Mozambique vs Cameroon

, KO: 19:00 , Stade Adrar
Cameroon

Buoyed by a historic victory on matchday two, Mozambique will head into the final round of the Africa Cup of Nations group stage with belief as they face Cameroon on Wednesday, knowing a top-two finish in Group F remains within reach.

The Mambas claimed their first-ever AFCON victory last Saturday, edging a five-goal thriller against Gabon. That result brought an end to a 16-match winless run across six campaigns at the continental championship.

The victory also halted a four-match sequence without a win in all competitions (D1, L3), which included a narrow opening defeat to defending champions Ivory Coast. Mozambique now sit third in Group F, just one point behind the leading pair.

A win would guarantee automatic qualification in what would be a landmark achievement for the nation, having exited at the group stage in every previous appearance. Even without maximum points, progression could still be possible as one of the best-ranked third-placed sides.

Cameroon, meanwhile, began their campaign with a 1-0 success over Gabon before sharing the points with Ivory Coast in their most recent outing. That draw means the Indomitable Lions have not managed successive victories since June, during a run of eight matches in which they have recorded three wins, three draws and two defeats.

Currently second in the group and level on four points with Ivory Coast at the summit, a win on Wednesday could see the five-time continental champions finish top of the pool, depending on results elsewhere, as they continue the pursuit of a first AFCON crown since 2017.

How the bookies view it: Cameroon favourites by some margin

The bookmakers firmly side with Cameroon, with odds of 4/7 at Ladbrokes underlining their perceived advantage. Mozambique are priced at 17/4, while the draw is available at 5/2.

Recent head-to-head: Cameroon dominance

Cameroon have enjoyed sustained success in this fixture, winning each of the last seven meetings between the sides. Mozambique’s only victory in the matchup came in their first encounter back in 1983.

Players to watch: Bryan Mbeumo targets stronger showing

Geny Catamo was central to Mozambique’s breakthrough win over Gabon, supplying the assist for the opener before converting a penalty himself, and remains a key figure to watch.

For Cameroon, Bryan Mbeumo will be keen to make a greater impact after a quieter display against Ivory Coast. The Manchester United forward did register an assist in the opener and carries a consistent threat in the final third.

Probable lineups

Mozambique report no fresh injury concerns and have no suspensions to contend with.

Cameroon, however, will be without right-back Junior Tchamadeu, who serves a one-match ban after receiving bookings in consecutive games.

Mozambique: Siluane; Calila, Mexer, Mandava, Langa; Guima, Amade; Catamo, Domingues, Witi; Bangal

Cameroon: Epassy; Malone, Koto, Tolo; Yongwa, Baleba, Avom, Bassogog; Loader, Mbeumo; Eyong

Anything else that catches the eye?

Both of Cameroon’s matches at this AFCON have produced at least 10 corners, while Mozambique’s games have averaged the same number, making a play on over 8.5 corners an appealing option.

Mbeumo has been directly involved in five goals, scoring twice and providing three assists across his last eight appearances for the Indomitable Lions. The 26-year-old attacker has gone consecutive matches without either a goal or an assist only once during that run, suggesting a return to productivity could be on the cards on Wednesday.
