Manchester United vs Burnley

, KO: 15:00 Apr 27, 2024, Old Trafford
Burnley

YOU just can't take your eyes off Manchester United at the moment and there should be more drama when they host a Burnley side fighting for their lives at the foot of the Premier League table.

The Red Devils were involved in one of the all-time classic cup ties last weekend as they blew a 3-0 lead against Coventry City before needing VAR and a penalty shoot-out to save them from an embarrassing defeat.

There was another thrilling comeback just three days later but this time if was United who came from behind as they recovered from 2-1 down to beat Sheffield United 4-2 at Old Trafford.

That victory lifted Erik ten Hag's side up to sixth and they will be determined to finish the Premier League campaign strongly ahead of an FA Cup Final showdown with neighbours Manchester City.

But injuries at the back are continuing to make Manchester United fragile and in-form Burnley will fancy their chances at Old Trafford as they bid to take another step in their Great Escape.

Vincent Kompany's men looked doomed to the drop just a few weeks ago but last weekend's 4-1 victory at Sheffield United has left them just three points from safety. A run of just one defeat in seven games has given them a fighting chance and they face fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest on the final day.

How the bookies view it: Burnley up against it

Despite their impressive recent form, Burnley are Old Trafford outsiders at a best 11/2 with 888Sport. Manchester United are just 1/2 at Bet365 while the draw pays 4/1 with the same firm.

Recent head to head: Red Devils have banished Old Trafford blues

Burnley had a spell where they savoured trips to Old Trafford, going unbeaten across four trips between 2016 and 2020. But it's Manchester United who have held the upper hand since that shock 2-0 loss four years ago, winning five of the next six Premier League meetings. Bruno Fernandes scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at Turf Moor earlier this season.

Players to watch: Rasmus ready for another Reds run

Bruno Fernandes delivered after I tipped him for a goal in midweek, with the midfielder grabbing a double in a man-of-the-match display. He also set up a goal for Rasmus Hojlund and that ended an eight game drought for the striker. The Dane has been a streaky scorer this season and netted eight goals in eight games earlier in the campaign. I'm going to back him to start another scoring run and he's 7/5 at Unibet for another goal.

Young winger Wilson Odobert has caught the eye whenever I've seen Burnley this season and could get some joy against United's leaky defence. The French kid is 23/10 at Betfair to either score or assist.

Predicted line-ups

Marcus Rashford missed out in midweek for Manchester United and remains a doubt. With Ten Hag still decimated in defence, Casemiro could continue as a stand-in defender. Burnley have no fresh injuries so Kompany may be tempted to field the same team that destroyed Sheffield United. But he could start David Datro Fofana up front to give some physicality against United's makeshift defence.

Manchester United: Onana; Dalot, Casimero, Maguire, Wan-Bissaka; McTominay, Fernandes, Mainoo; Diallo, Garnacho, Hojlund.

Burnley: Muric; O'Shea, Taylor, Assignon, Esteve; Berge, Vitinho, Cullen, Bruun Larsen; Fofana, Odobert.

Anything else catch the eye? Cullen decent value for another card

With Manchester United leaking five goals in their last two games and Burnley likely to have a go, it bodes well for plenty of goals at both ends. BTTS is just 4/7 at Unibet and combining that with over 2.5 strikes only boosts the odds to 3/4 at Coral. Over 3.5 match strikes is better at 11/10 with Unibet while over 1.5 first-half goals pays evens with Bet365.

Burnley midfielder Josh Cullen always gets stuck in and needs just one more card to take his tally into double figures for the season. The Irish international is 5/2 at Paddy Power to go into the book.
