Lyon vs Nantes

, KO: 19:45 , Groupama Stadium
Nantes

Lyon play host to Nantes on Sunday evening looking for the win that they hope will catapult them into contention for the top four of the Ligue 1 table.

A run of four games without a victory has left Paulo Fonseca's team down in seventh position in the standings, nine points adrift of leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

Meanwhile, Nantes only sit outside of the relegation zone on goal difference, helped by earning draws in their last two fixtures.

How the bookies see it: Lyon priced too low?

Despite their poor form on the domestic front, Bet365 have priced Lyon as the 9/20 favourites to prevail at the Groupama Stadium.

The draw at 15/4 will appeal to some punters, while Nantes have odds of 6/1 if anyone fancies what would be regarded as a considerable upset.

Head to head: Nantes wins a rarity

In the last 33 matches that have taken place between these two clubs, Lyon have prevailed on 20 occasions.

Furthermore, Nantes have just five wins to their name, and you have to go all the way back to September 2019 for the last time that they overcame Lyon in a Ligue 1 fixture.

To their credit, Nantes earned a 1-1 draw on home territory when these two clubs last met in January, but they suffered defeat in the three matches prior to that share of the spoils.

Players to watch: Tolisso to continue hot streak?

Although Lyon had gone five matches without success either side of the November international break, they got back on track in style with a 6-0 victory at Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Midfielder Corentin Tolisso was the surprise scorer of a hat-trick, but the 31-year-old now has seven goals for the season.

Playmaker Pavel Sulc is Lyon's leading marksman in Ligue 1 with five strikes, albeit with four of his goals coming via doubles and the Czech not netting since October 29.

While four Nantes players have each scored two goals in Ligue 1, Matthis Abline is the obvious danger man with two strikes and one assist coming from his last five appearances.

Probable lineups: Stick or twist for Fonseca?

Fonseca changed formation and personnel for the Europa League fixture and must now weigh up who to recall after last weekend's goalless draw at Auxerre.

Nicolas Tagliafico, back from a domestic suspension, is expected to deputise for the injured Clinton Mata, who suffered a hamstring injury in the aforementioned match.

Adam Karabec and Khalis Merah will be hopeful of returns to the side, yet that may depend on the formation used by Fonseca.

Meanwhile, Mostafa Mohamed, Johann Lepenant and Herba Guirassy are best positioned for recalls to the Nantes XI after they were introduced on the hour mark during the comeback 1-1 draw with Lorient.

Lyon: Greif; Tessman, Niakhate, Tagliafico; Maitland-Niles, Morton, Carvalho, Vinicius; Sulc, Tolisso; Satriano

Nantes: Lopes; Amian, Awaziem, Tati, Cozza; Tabibou, Kwon, Mwanga; Lahdo, El-Arabi, Abline

Anything else catch the eye?

Lyon are yet to draw a home Ligue 1 fixture during 2025-26, prevailing on four occasions and losing twice. One of their defeats was to PSG.

Two of their four wins were against Monaco and Strasbourg, direct rivals for the European qualification places.

Nantes possess the joint-second longest unbeaten away streak in Ligue 1, collecting six points from their last four games.

Furthermore, Luis Castro's team have conceded just six goals in as many away fixtures, seeing them hold the joint-best defensive away record in the division.
