Luxembourg vs Republic of Ireland

, KO: 19:45 , Luxembourg
Republic of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland are beginning to build some momentum under Heimir Hallgrimsson and will be out to get another win against Luxembourg in their final warm-up game for the World Cup finals qualifiers.

The Irish haven't qualified for a major finals since Euro 2016 and you have to go all the way back to 2002 for the last time they graced a World Cup.

Automatic qualification will be a tall order for next summer's tournament given the Republic have been drawn in the same qualifying group as mighty Portugal.

But Hallgrimsson will fancy his chances of securing a play-off slot as runners-up, with Hungary and Armenia the other teams in their section.

They kick off at home to the Hungarians and if they avoid defeat in this Luxembourg friendly it will be just one defeat in six games for the Irish.

Ireland drew 1-1 with Senegal on Friday in a Dublin friendly, bringing up two bets for our man Andy, and now face a Luxembourg side who have won just once in their last 11 games.

But that victory came in a friendly at home to a good Sweden side so Luxembourg have what it takes to halt Ireland's good recent run if they hit top form.

How the bookies view it: Irish with the edge

This is a tricky one to call but with Luxembourg in poor form they are BoyleSports' 14/5 outsiders. Ireland are 20/21 favourites and the draw pays 21/10.

Head to head: Honours even

The Republic of Ireland suffered one of the worst results in their history when Luxembourg beat them 1-0 in Dublin four years ago in another World Cup qualifier. But the Irish got their revenge by winning 3-0 away from home in the reverse fixture.

Players to watch: No longer sick as a Parrott

Halgrimsson will probably make a few changes, and Troy Parrott could start up front after illness forced him to sit on the bench against Senegal. The AZ Alkmaar striker has netted 18 times this season and is 9/4 at BoyleSports to add to that tally.

Gerson Rodrigues was the man who scored Luxembourg's famous winner in Dublin and he'll fancy his chances against the Irish again. The playmaker, who also netted in a Nations League draw with Northern Ireland is 3/1 at BoyleSports for anytime scorer.

Probable line-ups

With only a few days since their last friendly outing, both managers should make plenty of changes. It's also the last chance to experiment before the World Cup qualifiers.

Luxembourg: Cardoso, Velga, Carlson, Selimovic, Jans, Moreira, Sinani, Thill, Bohnert, Rodrigues, Dardari.

Republic of Ireland: Kelleher, O'Brien, Scales, Collin, Ebosele, Knight, Phillips, McAteer, Patrick, Ferguson, Parrott.

Anything else catch the eye?

Luxembourg's recent friendlies have been pretty dull affairs, with two of their last three ending in 1-0 scorelines. I'd be surprised if we saw a lot of goals in this one, given it's the final game at the end of a long season and players will be thinking about their summer holidays.

Under 2.5 goals pays just 1/2 at BoyleSports but the odds are a bit better if you bet against BTTS at 4/6. The half-time draw is another good option and that pays 20/23.

With little at stake I'd be surprised if we saw a lot of corners in this one and backing under 8.5 flag kicks pays 20/21 at BoyleSports.
