Fresh from their Carabao Cup triumph, Liverpool continue their quest for the quadruple as they host Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round. While their extra-time exploits at Wembley might make things tricky, the Reds are still expected to claim the upper over the Championship side that has struggled in recent weeks.
Liverpool will head into Wednesday’s clash off a high after scaling the first hurdle on their quest for a potential quadruple this season. They claimed a 1-0 extra-time victory over Chelsea last Sunday to lift the Carabao Cup.
That win is consistent with Liverpool’s recent form as they are unbeaten in 14 of their last 15 matches across all competitions. They have claimed 12 wins in that run, including a 5-2 victory over Championship side Norwich in the previous round of the FA Cup.
Liverpool have also been near perfect at Anfield where they have won their last six matches across all competitions. While most of the wins have been pretty one-sided, Jurgen Klopp’s men have failed to keep a single clean sheet in that run.
Southampton needed a replay to secure their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Having battled to a 1-1 draw in the first meeting with Watford, they returned to St Mary’s Stadium for a 3-0 win, thanks to goals from Sekou Mara and Che Adams.
That result was a rare shining moment for Southampton, who have looked out of sorts in recent weeks. Russell Martin’s men have lost three of their last four matches across all competitions and travel to Anfield off the back of a 2-1 home defeat to Millwall last weekend.
A bit of positive for Southampton ahead of Wednesday’s clash is their away form having lost just once in their last 14 matches on their travels. While there have been a number of draws in that run, they did claim a 2-0 victory at West Brom in their previous fixture on the road.
