Napoli also endured some Champions League disappointment after crashing out to Barcelona in midweek. They failed to build on a 1-1 draw in the first meeting and were beaten 3-1 in the second leg on Tuesday.
Their exit from Europe means Napoli are heading towards a trophyless campaign as they are also out of the Coppa Italia while being 21 points behind Inter Milan. They are unbeaten in their last five Serie A matches but were held to a 1-1 draw with Torino in their previous fixture.
Napoli have also struggled on their travels, claiming just one win from their last nine away matches across all competitions. However, that win was a 6-1 victory at Sassuolo in their previous fixture on the road.
