Greece vs England

, KO: 19:45 Nov 14, 2024, Athens Olympic Stadium
England

England will travel to Athens on Thursday, 14 November to take on Greece in a huge UEFA Nations League clash.

The Three Lions currently trail Greece by three points at the top of the table and with the difference between first and second being automatic promotion to League A or a playoff, the stakes are high.

England come into the match knowing that they have to win by two goals to leave their fate in their own hands going into their final match against Ireland on Sunday.

How the bookies view it: The visitors start as favourites

England come into this match as the favourites with the bookies but their odds aren't as short as they perhaps would have been had Greece not stunned them at Wembley last month. Betfred have priced an England win at 19/20 while a victory for Greece has been priced at 16/5. The draw, which would be a great result for the hosts, has been priced at 12/5.

Recent head-to-head: A Greek double on the cards?

The most recent clash between these two nations came just last month when Greece stunned England by running out as 2-1 winners at Wembley to take control of the Nations League group. That night at Wembley was the first meeting between England and Greece since 2006 and their first competitive meeting since 2001.

Players to watch: Plenty of new boys in the England ranks

So far, a total of eight players have dropped out from the England squad to face Greece which means this is now a squad full of inexperienced players. Five players have been called up to replace the eight drop-outs with Morgan Rogers the headline selection given that it will be his first time in an England camp.

The call-up for Rogers is most definitely deserved. The 22-year-old has been brilliant for Aston Villa so far this season, driving the team forward from midfield. Rogers has added goals and assists to his game this season, too, and has already notched up three goals and two assists in eleven league appearances for the Villains.

In terms of Greek players that England will need to keep a close eye on, Vangelis Pavlidis will be at the top of the list. The Benfica striker netted twice at Wembley to down England last month and has scored three goals in his last four appearances at club level.

Predicted line-ups

Greece will be without Dimitros Kourbelis for this one as he serves a one-match suspension. Fotis Ioannidis is back in the squad after missing the last break through injury. As mentioned, England have a whole host of problems with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer pulling out of the squad after it had been announced.

Greece: Vlachodimos – Rota, Koulierakis, Mavropanos, Tsimikas – Siopis, Mantalos – Masouras, Bakasetas, Tzolis – Pavlidis

England: Pickford – Walker, Konsa, Guehi, Lewis – Gallagher, Gomes – Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon – Kane

Anything else catch the eye?

England's four matches under Lee Carlsey have produced a combined 11 goals which works out as just less than three goals per match. Meanwhile, a total of ten goals have been scored across Greece's last four matches. Under 2.5 goals to be scored on Thursday has been priced at 8/13 by Betfred.
