Germany vs Finland

, KO: 19:45 , MEWA Arena
Finland

Germany continue their preparations for the upcoming World Cup with an international friendly against Finland at the MEWA Arena on Sunday night.

Julian Nagelsmann's side are on a seven-match winning streak as they bid to maintain momentum ahead of their bid to become five-time world champions.

Meanwhile, Finland are looking to fine tune their team ahead of the next UEFA Nations League campaign, which starts in September.

Jacob Friis's team suffered a penalty-shootout defeat at the hands of international minnows Cape Verde in their last outing.

How the bookies see it: Germany win a foregone conclusion?

Bookmakers Bet365 have priced Germany as an extremely-short 1/8 favourite for this contest, with Finland the 14/1 outsiders.

The 15/2 for a draw may attract attention from punters, but it is clear that Germany are expected to run riot, despite the fact that Finland have victories over Poland and New Zealand on their record over the past 12 months.

Head to head: First meeting in a decade

These two nations have not played each other since Germany recorded a 2-0 victory in a friendly back in August 2016.

Their last competitive encounters came during qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, with both games ending in a draw.

Finland have only won one of their 23 matches against Germany in their history, that success coming all the way back in 1923.

Player to watch: Wirtz to show international class

Having ended the season with just one goal and one assist from his final nine games for Liverpool, Florian Wirtz is not a player in form.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old has registered two goals and four assists across his last three appearances for Germany, four of those six contributions coming in a 4-3 triumph in Switzerland.

Wirtz is likely to start this fixture having been restricted to a substitute outing in Liverpool's last Premier League fixture of 2025-26.

With Teemu Pukki having retired from international football, Joel Pohjanpolo should lead the line for Finland.

The 87-cap international, who has 19 goals for his country, has just concluded a season with Palermo where he scored 25 times from 40 appearances in the second tier of Italian football.

Probable lineups:

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has come out of international retirement, but a calf injury keeps him out of this match.

Nick Woltemade could start as the number nine, a consequence of Kai Havertz being part of Arsenal's squad for the Champions League final.

Jamal Musiala is back in the squad for the first time in more than a year after injury. With Serge Gnabry having been ruled out of the World Cup, he could replace his Bayern Munich teammate.

Friis may name the same Finland XI from the victory over New Zealand in March, although a decision will need to be made over whether to select veteran Lukas Hradecky over Viljami Sinisalo.

Adam Markhiev and Naatan Skytta play in Germany for Nurnberg and Kaiserslautern respectively.

Germany: Baumann; Kimmich, Tah, Schlotterbeck, Raum; Goretzka, Stiller, Musiala; Sane, Woltemade, Wirtz

Finland: Hradecky; Alho, Koski, Miettinen, Lahteenmaki; Suhonen, Markhiev, Walta; Skytta, Pohjanpolo, Antman

Anything else catch the eye?

Germany have scored 21 goals across their seven-match winning streak.

However, the four clean sheets that they kept were against Slovakia, Northern Ireland and Luxembourg (twice).

Four goals were conceded in the March double-header against Switzerland and Ghana respectively.

In normal time, Finland are unbeaten in three games. Those fixtures were against Andorra, New Zealand and Cape Verde.

Between September and November, Finland conceded eight goals across defeats to Norway, Poland and Netherlands.
