Fenerbahce vs FC TwenteUEFA Europa League Conference, KO: 18:00 Aug 24, 2023, Sukru Saracoglu Stadium
Fenerbahce and FC Twente continue their quest to reach the group stage of the Europa Conference League with a playoff first leg clash on Thursday. Both teams have looked sharp in the early stages of the season and while Twente should do enough to stay in the tie, the Turks are expected to have the upper hand in this first meeting at home.
Fenerbahce looked imperious in the previous round of the Conference League as they did the double over Maribor to book their place in the playoffs. They picked up a 3-1 victory in the first meeting at home before easing to a 3-0 win in the second leg.
The Turkish giants missed out on the Super League last season and appear to be using that disappointment as motivation this term. Ismail Kartal’s men have won all six of their matches across all competitions so far, scoring 19 goals along the way.
European nights in Turkey usually offer an intense and intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams and Fenerbahce will be keen to harness all of that. They have won eight of their last nine home matches across all competitions, a run stretching back to last season.
FC Twente appear to be matching Fenerbahce stride for stride this season and have also made a blistering start to the campaign. While it is nit exactly a 100% record like their Turkish counterparts, they have remained unbeaten across all competitions this term.
The Dutch side also did the double over their opponents in the previous round of the Europa Conference League, easing past Riga 5-0 on aggregate. Joseph Oosting’s men travel to Turkey off the back off a 3-1 win over PEC Zwolle in an Eredivisie fixture last weekend.
While things may appear rosy for Twente this season, they have looked slightly unconvincing on their travels. They have claimed just one victory in their last five away matches while also winning just once in their last three Conference League fixtures on the road.
How the bookies view it
Both teams may have made blistering starts to the season but Fenerbahce are considered overwhelming favourites to claim a home win at 13/20 with Unibet. A victory for Twente is valued at 17/4 by bet365 while William Hill is offering odds of 16/5 for a draw.
Head to head
Twente have two wins while Fenerbahce have been victorious just once in the last three matches. The most recent meeting between both teams was a friendly in 2011 which ended 2-1 in favour of the Dutch side.
Players to watch
Edin Dzeko has settled quickly to life in Turkey and is among the early standout players for Fenerbahce this season. The Bosnian striker has found the net three times in his last three matches and is priced at 7/5 by William Hill to maintain his scoring run.
Twente can also hold their own in attack and tend to spread their goals across the team. However, Ricky van Wolfswinkel often leads the line for the Dutch side and is priced at 3/1 by Paddy Power to find the net on Thursday.
Anything else catch the eye?
The goals have flowed freely for Fenerbahce and Twente early in the season and both teams can be backed to score at 8/11 with bet365. The Turkish side has seen over 3.5 goals in five of their last six Conference League matches and a repeat is priced at 9/5 by Unibet, who is also offering odds of 4/6 for over 2.5 goals.
