Everton vs Newcastle UnitedEnglish Premier League, KO: 19:30 Dec 7, 2023, Goodison Park
EVERTON came closer to digging themselves out of the relegation zone with a huge win at Nottingham Forest at the weekend and welcome an injury-hit Newcastle United side to Goodison Park on Thursday.
That ten points point reduction saw the Liverpool giants plunge into the drop zone, but it's highly unlikely they will stay there after chalking up a 1-0 win at the City Ground, which is a tough venue to go and collect three points.
In fact, at present, if they didn't have that deduction, they would be comfortable enough in 12th place and would be looking to kick on for a European spot.
Their last home game was a highly-charged affair, but they let the occasion get the better of them against Manchester United and they will hoping they show more focus against the Geordies, who became the latest team to inflict a defeat on United at the weekend.
But while the Toon Army are second in the league on home form, they are a distant 15th on the away table with only one win on their travels in the league this season.
They could be missing up to 13 players for their trip to Merseyside with England keeper Nick Pope the latest to be a long-term absentee. Martin Dubravka will cover.
How the bookies view it
Newcastle United are favourites here despite being away from home at 5/4 with BetVictor.
Recent head to heads
Newcastle United did the double over Everton last season which included an impressive 4-1 win at Goodison Park.
Players to watch?
Dwight McNeil was the hero for Everton when he netted his first goal of the season at Nottingham in the weekend. He is 7/1 to score anytime with UniBet.
Callum Wilson remains out with a hamstring injury, leaving Alexander Isak as Newcastle's only recognised striker for Thursday. The Swede is 9/5 to score anytime with Paddy Power.
Anything else catch the eye?
Everton could be worth a speculative punt at decent odds here.
Newcastle simply cannot replicate their home form on the road and tamely lost at Bournemouth and drew at Wolves and West Ham. They also lost at Brighton and Manchester City.
Any team would struggle with the injury list that Eddie Hoew has to put up with and the likes of Pope, Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Harvey Barnes being out is a huge blow.
Everton have improved having lost just one in seven and look too big if they don't let the occasion get to them, with their fans again set to protest against the points deduction decision.
The layers expect this to be tastya and have set the bar high for cards, but Newcastle only had one player booked against Manchester United at the weekend and Everton had none at Forest in what were both high-pressure games.
