Brentford vs Sunderland

, KO: 19:30 , Gtech Community Stadium
Sunderland

Two of the Premier League's surprise packages collide in an intriguing encounter at the Gtech Community Stadium as Brentford take on Sunderland.

Both teams were being talked about as relegation candidates before a ball was kicked this season but at the halfway stage they're on the fringes of the top four.

Both teams have amassed 30 points after 20 games but the Bees find themselves sitting above the Black Cats on goal difference.

They scored four on Sunday in a thrilling 4-2 win at Everton, with more tips landing for the Betting Desk, and that made it 10 points from 12 over the festive period.

Sunderland's form isn't quite as hot, with four draws in the same run of games, but they've had a tougher set of fixtures.

Regis Le Bris has also been without six players due to the Africa Cup of Nations so the Frenchman will be pretty pleased with recent results.

Only Arsenal have lost fewer Premier League games than Sunderland this season and the Black Cats will fancy their chances of taking something from their trip to London.

How the bookies view it: Bees to keep buzzing

Brentford's home form has been superb this season and that's probably why they're hot favourites for this one at 4/5 with most firms. Sunderland look a bit overpriced at 7/2 with Betfred and the draw will be popular with punters at 13/5 with Bet365.

Recent head to head: Brentford out for revenge

Sunderland claimed a 2-1 win over Brentford at the Stadium of Light back in August, with Wilson Isidor hitting a late winner. But the Bees had gone five unbeaten in this fixture before that, winning three times.

Players to watch: Thiago on fire

Igor Thiago was the Brentford hero on Sunday, with the Brazilian scoring a hat-trick. That took his tally for the season to 15 so he looks decent value at 15/13 with Unibet for another goal here.

Brian Brobbey scored Sunderland's leveller at Tottenham on Sunday and the Dutchman looks like a shrewd signing. He has only netted three times this season but offers a huge physical presence up front and is 21/10 at Bet365 to score or assist.

Probable line-ups

Brentford have a pretty clean bill of health, with only Fabio Carvalho, Josh Dasilva and Antoni Milambo on the sidelines. Dango Ouattara and Frank Onyeka are away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Isidor and Aji Alese are the only injured Sunderland players but Noah Sadiki, Arthur Masuaku, Chemsdine Talbi, Habib Diarra, Bertrand Traore and Reinildo all reached the last 16 at AFCON and should miss out again.

Brentford: Kelleher, Henry, Ajer, Collins, Kayode, Henderson, Yarmoliuk, Janelt, Damsgaard, Schade, Thiago.

Sunderland: Roefs, Alderete, Ballard, Mukiele, Geertuda, Hume, Xhaka, Le Fee, Adingra, Brobbey, Mundle.

Anything else catch the eye?

There was little between these teams in the first meeting this season and it should be a similar story in the return. That makes the half-time draw a decent option and it pays 6/5 at Unibet.

Backing Sunderland's Trai Hume for over 1.5 fouls paid off for me at 4/1 in the clash with Manchester City and he could be at the heart of the battle again. The same bet pays 3/1 here with Bet365 while combining a foul for Hume and Brentford stopper Nathan Collins is a decent 8/5.

We only saw seven corners when these sides met earlier in the campaign so going for under 9.5 flag kicks here could pay off at 11/10 with Paddy Power.
