After a humiliating defeat in the Copa Del Rey, Barcelona return to La Liga action with a Monday night clash against Girona. The Catalans remain well on course to win the title and should be too strong for Girona, who have struggled in recent weeks.
Barcelona are coming off a humiliating 4-0 home defeat to bitter rivals Real Madrid in the Copa Del Rey semi-final. They failed to build on their first leg advantage and were completely outclassed by Los Blancos.
The defeat means Barcelona have now crashed out of every competition with the La Liga title their only chance for silverware this season. The good news is that they hold a 12-point lead at the top of the table and claimed a 4-0 victory at Elche in their previous La Liga fixture.
Prior to the defeat to Real Madrid, Barcelona had claimed four straight wins in La Liga. Xavi’s men have also won nine of their last 10 home matches in the league, keeping eight clean sheets in that run.
Girona’s campaign appears to be effectively over as they are not challenging for much at the moment. They are currently 11th on the standings, well clear of the relegation zone but also well off the pace in the race for European qualification.
Michel’s men have not been at their best lately but head into Monday’s clash off the back of a 2-1 victory over Espanyol in their previous fixture. Cristhian Stuani and Arnau Martinez got the goals as they ended a three-match winless run.
Girona have also found things difficult on their travels this season with just two away wins so far. They have lost three of their last five matches on the road, conceding seven goals in the last three fixtures in that run.
