The undisputed match of the weekend takes place on Sunday at the Metropolitano, as second-placed Atletico Madrid host league leaders Barcelona in a fixture that has all the makings of a classic title-race six-pointer.
Barcelona arrive in the Spanish capital in frightening form under manager Hansi Flick. The defending champions are sitting at the summit with 30 points, fresh off a 3-0 midweek Champions League victory over Aston Villa.
Their attacking output this season has been nothing short of remarkable. Barca have netted an astonishing 60 times in just 15 matches in all competitions, scoring three or more goals in 12 of those outings.
13 of their 15 fixtures to date were one-sided thrashings. Their only two defeats came last month, when they met PSG and Real Madrid back-to-back.
The next challenge is the team they faced the most over the past 12 months – Atletico Madrid. Los Colchoneros have also not looked as strong in years, and a win on Sunday would put Diego Simeone’s name in the record books as the first-ever manager with 345 wins in La Liga.
While they might lack Barcelona's sheer volume of goals, Atletico’s tactical discipline and intensity have proven effective since the start, as they boast the tightest defence in the league with only eight conceded goals.
But of course, even offensively, they score an average of two goals per match, which is not a small number either. It is simply not close to Barcelona’s average of over four goals scored per match.
How the bookies view it: Los Colchoneros are used to being underestimated
Looking at the form of the two teams, this is a tough one to call, but Barcelona's rampant goalscoring form makes them the betting favourites, with an away win priced around 4/5.
You can also back Atletico Madrid at around 11/4, while a draw is priced even higher at 33/10.
Recent head-to-head: Barca won four of six, but got eliminated twice
These two sides have become very familiar with each other recently, considering that they played each other six times last season across three competitions.
Atletico Madrid claimed only two wins, but eliminated Barcelona from both the Champions League and Copa del Rey, which I believe is more significant. Barca won the other four H2Hs, including the two in La Liga.
Players to watch: You can’t stop both Raphinha and Yamal on the same night
Raphinha has been the go-to man for goals this season. The Brazilian has just agreed to a new contract extension until 2030 and has been the key to their success alongside Lamine Yamal.
With 19 goals and three assists in 13 appearances this season, it is hardly a mistake to back him to score every match. But on this particular occasion, I am more inclined to focus on Yamal as the primary playmaker.
The 19-year-old has even more goal contributions with 13 goals and 11 assists, so the 11/20 for him to score or assist feels like a gift.
Probable line-ups
Atletico Madrid: Oblak, Grimaldo, Hancko, Pubill, Llorente, Simeone, Hjulmand, Barrios, Baena, Lee, Alvarez
Barcelona: Garcia, Cancelo, Martin, Cubarsi, Farinas, Pedri, Bernal, Gordon, Fermin, Yamal, Raphinha
Anything else catch the eye?
The biggest narrative heading into this match is Barcelona's injury list. The visitors are severely depleted, with key players like Rodri and Dani Olmo both ruled out. Furthermore, Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, and Andreas Christensen are major doubts.
These absences will make this clash much tighter, although Barcelona’s main goalscorers will be on the pitch.
Barcelona always score, but their defensive injuries leave them vulnerable against a top-quality side. They conceded two to Real Madrid and four to PSG.
One could argue for a draw, but this rivalry has always been all or nothing for both sides. We’ve seen only three draws in their last 20 H2Hs.
I am inclined to back Barca to win here, as another derby loss has to be unacceptable for Hansi Flick. Bayern Munich exposed Atletico’s weaknesses midweek, when they beat them 2-0 away, so let’s hope Barcelona have done their homework.
