Gethin was a much shorter price than when advised, partly because his main opponent was a non-runner, and he still couldn't win.
Gethin had every chance to win from the position he was placed by Callum Rodriguez. The horse wanted to stay to the near side on the home straight, and plugged on when he looked well beaten.
Kind Of Blue was a little keen in the early stages, but it didn't matter, as the winner was extremely impressive.
Sparan Nua 7/2 – Longchamp 2.50
This is a brilliant Group 1 for the fillies and mares at Longchamp. It's fairly open, and upsets do happen in filly races, so I couldn't rule out the one I'd expect to have no chance.
I could be getting baited in by Sparan Nua's recent performance behind Kalpana, but it's hard not to be impressed by how well she ran. Kalpana is a Group 1 performer and is one of the best middle-distance horses in Europe on her day, yet Sparan Nua probably should have beaten her here at York and was very unlucky.
Sparan Nua got checked at a vital point at York, and with a clear run, the short-head defeat definitely would have been a victory. She has only raced six times, so there's every reason to believe that she has plenty more to come. If she can reproduce her form from last time out, that should be enough for her to get the win. I don't see a horse in this race that is on the same level as Kalpana.
Bay City Roller 5/2 – Longchamp 4.35
With this being a small-field event, and likely to be a warm-up for the Arc for Daryz, I thought Bay City Roller could make this a proper test for last year's Arc winner.
Bay City Roller gets on very well on testing ground. The Racing Post says the ground at Longchamp is soft, but I can't trust that, as the weather they've had around Paris has been warm; I wanted to focus on the fact that Bay City Roller could be the likely pace angle.
They decided to run in a Group 1 in Germany last year, and he loved every second of it. He won that race by 7L, putting in a very strong performance. This year, he has shown that he can put in performances which could trouble Daryz, like the runaway success at Epsom in the Coronation Cup. Many in that race didn't enjoy the track or ground, but you can't take away from the visuals of the success.
Daryz will go for the Arc again, so I can't imagine he'll be cherry ripe for this contest. Bay City Roller will also likely head to Paris next month, but they'll want to get a win in beforehand and prove that he can beat a key horse.
