IT was a great day for favourite backers at Goodwood yesterday, and a great day for Thommo's followers as he bagged three winners, tipped at 8-1, 9-2 and 11-4 (a potential 184-1 treble). Today he's looking across the channel for his main bet.
Deauville 2.47
ADVERTISE (2.47) is trading at a generous 11-4 generally to win at Deauville under Frankie Dettori.
After sprinting clear to land the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, Advertise ran into a rejuvenated Ten Sovereigns in the July Cup. Martyn Meade's colt was doing his best work at the finish at Newmarket and this extra half-furlong is a bonus.
A visor is fitted and Advertise should have the legs of UK rivals Invincible Army, One Master and steadily-improving Space Blues, while French No 1 Polydream was beaten by Hey Gaman at Longchamp in late May.
Chester 5.20
SCOFFLAW (5.20) is the best bet on the card at soggy Chester. David Evans has booked Harry Bentley and Scofflaw can bring up his hat-trick meeting some out-of-form/inconsistent rivals.
The five-year-old handled some cut underfoot when winning an apprentices' event at Haydock last time and a 4lb rise is okay.
Chester 3.10
MAJOR JUMBO (3.10) found Kimberella a neck too good in this sprint 12 months ago but should go one better for Kevin Ryan. Major Jumbo was out of his depth in the July Cup but this represents a fairly significant drop in class.
He won a 17-runner handicap on soft at York last autumn, so conditions shouldn't be a problem, and stall three is ideal.
Chester 3.40
DARK LOCHNAGAR (3.40) wasn't stopping over the extended 1m 2f distance here eight days ago when readily holding Gabrial The One and Keith Dalgleish's gelding should confirm that form on 6lb worse terms now asked to travel 1m 4f.
Cape Islay had Gabrial The One six lengths adrift when scoring here in June, but that was on a fast ground. Mark Johnston's filly hasn't beaten a rival in her last two starts but Johnston's horses have the knack of bouncing back from poor efforts.
Hereby is dropped into a handicap off a lowly mark and Ralph Beckett's three-year-old is open to bags of improvement.
I was bursting to have a bet on front-runner Sha La La La Lee in the 7f handicap at 4.50 but with Club Wexford and Love Dreams in opposition he may well be harried for the lead.

Having failed to impress on his previous two starts, he is dropped down into Class 4 company for only his third h’cap start. He won a novice race very impressively back in June and today’s conditions look certain to suit. The track suits front runners and the plum draw will give us a decent chance if employing similar tactics. The split take means a top 3 finish alone will recoup 90% of our investment.
15:10 Chester ANGEL ALEXANDER top 3 0.5pts 11/10
This horse won here lto by 6 lengths on ground which will be similar today. That was over a furlong shorter however and this is quite a big step up in quality. For those reasons, he can only be chanced in the place market but given he has won 3 and finished 2nd four times in 9 starts, we should get a run for our money.
