Haston Clermont put in a strong staying performance to win at Catterick and give Noel Williams his first win at the Yorkshire track. The form was there for all to see and it is surprising that he didn’t go off an even shorter price, as I thought he looked bulletproof.
Bebside Banter was poor and I expected more from him. Two horses fell/brought down and he still couldn’t manage to win, so it looks like he’s in the grips of the handicapper.
Wincanton 2:25 – Gingerbred
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Gingerbed go off favourite for this race, as he gets in this race off a low weight and is only 3lbs higher for his recent success at Ffos Las.
This is a decent staying chase and there are a fair few you could easily give a strong chance of winning if they turn up in their best form, but Gingerbred is the one to be on. He showed that he has no problems on heavy ground and staying the trip when staying on powerfully at Ffos Las last time out, which saw the front two pull 6L clear of the third.
The form of that race looks strong as the runner-up has since won on his next start, the third has finished as runner-up to a progressive horse and the fourth (Pimlico Point who was my selection in the Ffos Las race) has won a Class 3 race at Exeter.
There should be a fair bit of progression still left in the tank for Gingerbred who has only had five chase starts in his career so far. He is only a 6yo and he has been getting better with every start, but it was interesting to see a lot of money come in for him last time out, and they were right in backing him strongly.
He has to go over another furlong today and is at a new track but based on how he hit the line at Ffos Las, he should be staying on very well.
