Dashing Donkey was a big drifter before the off in the opening race at Southwell, and the drift indicated what was going to happen.
He was prominent, went to the far side on his own, and then weakened massively inside the final furlong.
Knight Of Magic didn't lead like I was hoping, and was very one-paced behind the winner and runner-up. It was a strange result as the winner was comfortably behind the runner-up on their last start.
Asia Force 7/4 (1pt) – Wolverhampton 6.00
Karl Burke has had a quiet spell over the Christmas period and hasn't had a winner in the last fortnight. However, that's not enough to stop me from backing his well-bred son of Frankel on debut in the 6.00 pm race.
This looks like a very weak race based on the form we've seen from every horse in the race. Asia Force is the only horse that hasn't got racecourse experience, but based on how Karl Burke's debutantes ran last season, he should be good enough to get involved.
New Bay Star put in a career-best performance on his fourth start last time out, a month ago. It looked like he enjoyed the step up in trip and liked the all-weather surface, as well as benefiting from the gelding operation.
The form isn't too strong, with the third-placed horse being a neck behind, who was 25/1 on debut.
Asia Force has a superb pedigree and looks like a horse that Karl Burke would do very well with. He is by Frankel and is out of dual listed all-weather mare called Scentasia.
Mollie Foster 6/4 (1pt) – Wolverhampton 6.30
Despite running against a course and distance winner and a six-time Tapeta winner, Mollie Foster looks the best bet on Monday's card.
The Horse Watchers are a very shrewd bunch of owners and do very good business. They acquired Mollie Foster after she won last time out at Southwell. The form of that race looks solid, and the best by quite a distance.
Her recent win was in a slightly better version of a Class 4, which has seen the runner-up run well since, and the third horse win twice since.
She is going up in trip by an extra furlong from last time, and that looks like it could bring out further improvement. She was staying on strongly and led close home over a mile, so the extra furlong has to be advantageous.
